Job summary

University of Michigan is seeking a Unit Custodian to perform routine and detailed cleaning tasks in a hospital setting. The role requires physical endurance to handle long shifts, ladder-use for interior cleaning, and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Open/close buildings and operate lights/equipment; perform daily cleaning tasks.

Job description

Responsibilities*

Duties including but not limited to:

  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures and furnishings.
  • Clean mirrors, interior surfaces of exterior glass, and both sides of interior glass using a step ladder as needed.
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures.
  • Dust venetian blinds while standing on the floor or a step ladder.
  • Spot wash walls to remove such items as splash marks around sinks and fingerprints around light switches.
  • Make beds and change linen.
  • Change or replace shower or cubicle curtains while standing on floor or step ladder.
  • Collect and transport waste materials to central location.
  • Report items in need of repair.
  • Sweep and/or dust mop floors and stairways.
  • Wet mop rooms and small areas of floor or stairs to clean up such items as spilled liquid or food.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructions.
  • Open or lock buildings or rooms.
  • Turn on and off lights and equipment.
  • Replace burnt-out incandescent light bulbs while standing on the floor or a step ladder.
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings.
  • Collect and transport soiled linen to central locations.
  • Clean assigned area or work and equipment.
  • Wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas.
  • Hand mop areas inaccessible to mechanical floor cleaning equipment.
  • Operate walk-behind equipment used for routine floor cleaning.
  • Operate touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment.
Required Qualifications*
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English.
  • Must be able to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to perform a wide range of physical activities, including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching, etc
  • Must not have any type of lifting restrictions.
  • Must be able to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting.
  • Must be a team player, able to prioritize work and be able to handle stress on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

This position is 40hoursDays / Sunday-Thursday/ 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
