Job summary

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community invites applications for a Custodian I to perform cleaning and custodial maintenance across multiple facilities, including medical/clinical environments. This is an on-site, non-exempt role with on-call and weekend hours as needed.

Responsibilities include general cleaning tasks, chemical handling, inventory management, safety compliance, and supporting other custodial staff to maintain a clean and safe environment for community members and staff.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of SRPMIC history, culture, laws, ordinances, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of Public Works Department and assigned programs and duties.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of custodial chemicals.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment including buffers, burnishers, wet and dry vacuums and supplies used for cleaning work.
  • Knowledge of general custodial building maintenance methods and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of general cleaning tasks including vacuuming, extraction, carpets, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, washing windows, dusting, and restroom sanitation.
  • Mixes cleaning chemicals and solvents as instructed and trained.
  • Maintains an inventory of cleaning equipment, tools, supplies, and materials; notifies supervisor to reorder as needed.
  • Follows safety data sheets, bloodborne pathogens guidelines, PPE usage, and labeling.
  • Picks up and delivers items for other custodial staff as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties to support departmental operations.

Job description

Definition:

Under general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, performs a variety of cleaning and custodial maintenance activities in various Community facilities, including medical / clinical environments. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and is subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Distinguishing Features:

The Custodian I is a non-driving position and does not require a GED. This position will not work at the Education facilities during regular school hours and therefore is not required to pass an extensive background and fingerprint clearance. The position may work in education and government facilities, which may include medical / clinical environments.

Essential Functions:

  1. Performs a variety of general cleaning tasks, including vacuuming, extraction, cleaning carpets, scrubbing, and mopping floors, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors, washing windows and equipment, dusting and polishing furniture, cleaning/sanitizing restroom facilities, and stocking all with appropriate custodial supplies.
  2. Mixes cleaning chemicals and solvents necessary to perform cleaning activities as instructed and trained.
  3. Maintains an inventory of cleaning equipment, tools, supplies, and materials at the assigned work location. Notifies Lead Custodian or Custodial Supervisor in a timely manner to reorder equipment, tools, supplies and materials as needed.
  4. Performs all work in a safe and efficient manner. Understands Safety Data Sheets, blood borne pathogens, proper equipment usage, labelling, signage, and personal protective equipment as instructed and trained.
  5. Picks up and delivers items for other custodial staff, including supplies and materials as needed.
  6. Performs other job-related duties that enhance and facilitate departmental operations.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, laws, ordinances, customs, and traditions of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of the Public Works Department and assigned programs and duties.
  • Knowledge of proper and safe use of custodial chemicals.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment including buffers, burnishers, wet and dry vacuums and supplies used for cleaning work.
  • Knowledge of general custodial building maintenance methods and practices.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand and walk approximately 90% of the workday.
  • Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
  • Ability to climb ladders or steps.
  • Ability to lift arms above shoulders to perform work tasks.
  • Ability to use and work safely with cleaning chemicals and solvents.
  • Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
  • Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Position may be required to work in educational facilities and therefore incumbent is required to provide proof of current immunizations at time of hire. Follow up verification of current immunizations is required, and immunizations will be administered as needed. Maintaining booster shots on immunizations and taking a TB skin test or x-ray annually is also required. Documentation of the required immunizations is absolutely essential for the file and for the health of the children in the Early Childhood Education Program.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
