Job summary

Johnson County Government's Facilities Department is hiring Custodian Technician I to support Lenexa and Merriam Libraries. You will perform detailed cleaning, sanitizing, and upkeep across work areas, restrooms, floors, and fixtures, following safety protocols and supervisor guidance.

This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least one year of related experience or education substitution; a valid driver's license and the ability to pass a background check are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• One (1) year of related experience may substitute for education.
• Must pass a thorough criminal history screening and have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Performs detailed cleaning including disinfecting surfaces; dusts, mops, sweeps, and maintains floors; cleans windows, fixtures, and furnishings; restocks supplies and handles recycling.
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and other surfaces; responds to requests; prioritizes tasks based on supervisor guidance.
• Completes paperwork, timesheets and equipment logs using a computerized system.

Job Description

Johnson County Facilities Department is looking for qualified applicants to fill the position of Custodian Technician I.Initial review of applicants will begin on October 6th, 2026.

We have two openings for the following locations:

• Lenexa Library; Sunday - Thursday, 830am - 5pm
• Merriam Library; Tuesday - Saturday, 830am - 5pm

Responsibilities Include:

• Completes detailed cleaning including disinfecting surface areas; dusts, mops, sweeps, and autoscrubs floors; completes spot cleaning of carpets and flooring; washes windows, fixtures, floors and walls; dusts furniture, lockers, cabinets, walls, window sills, radiators, and other furnishings; dusts and washes blinds; empties trash receptacles.
• Cleans and sanitizes toilets, urinals, sinks, hand dryers, and other surfaces; restocks inventory; assists in recycling efforts; responds to customer requests; prioritizes tasks based on supervisors' guidance.
• Completes paperwork, timesheets and equipment logs using computerized system.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. One (1) year of related experience may substitute for education. Must pass a thorough criminal history screening and have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Previous related experience is preferred.

Education/Experience Substitutions:

Experience may be substituted for degree.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

Excessive standing and/or walking: 60%

Exposure to extreme temperatures, fumes and/or chemicals, heights, and loud noises.

Lifting weight: 25lbs.

On call/stand-by work required.

Weather essential: Department Essential

Uniform Required

Wearing of goggles, rubber boots, rubber gloves and other PPE as required.

Position is required to respond to requests for emergency and afterhours work which will require work when the facility is closed (e.g. holiday, weekends, nights). This work will require overtime as needed.

Physical abilities, including mobility, agility, strength, dexterity, balance, coordination, and /or endurance.

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments/agencies in a declared emergency situation.
