SUMMARY

Under the general direction of a department or facility manager, performs supervisory work in general cleaning and maintenance, has immediate custodial responsibility in directing, and participating in the work of subordinate custodial personnel; does related work as required.


Job Title: Head Custodian

$19.00/hr
Shift: 6AM - 2:30PM, M-F


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (illustrative only):
  1. Assists in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures and standards of work.
  2. Provides leadership and guidance to departmental personnel.
  3. Assists the supervisor in developing the department's annual budget.
  4. Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment.
  5. Maintains proficiency in all techniques and equipment used by the custodians.
  6. Ensures that quality standards are met, by inspecting completed work.
  7. Makes recommendations to the manager for changes in supplies, equipment or procedures to improve safety or to reduce costs.
  8. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.
  9. On an ongoing basis, provides appropriate technical training to all custodial staff.
  10. Investigates, documents and reports all unusual occurrences to the manager.
  11. Ensures all equipment is tested regularly.
  12. Schedules personnel for proper coverage of custodial services.
  13. Conducts orientation and ongoing training for departmental personnel.
  14. Provides regularly scheduled services to departmental personnel.
  15. Maintains records of orientation and service training programs.
  16. Performs minor maintenance repairs including: fixing plumbing leaks attributed to leaking faucets, loose drain connections, or faulty flush meters; evaluation of systemic mechanical problems including HVAC issues; semi-annual preventative maintenance programs to include the changing of belts and filters, oiling of motors and bearings, and all other designated mechanical assignments with preventative maintenance programs; replacing switch covers, replacing burned out lighting ballasts (no more than one at a time), replacing burned out light bulbs, repair of minor wallboard damage, spot painting, and all heating systems start-up procedures.
  17. Maintains specific safety precautions.
  18. Must be able to communicate with customers, coworkers, or supervisors who only speak English.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  1. High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) with a minimum of five (5) years experience in custodial service.
  2. Basic knowledge of all mechanical and utility systems including plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of the organization. Fluency in Spanish preferred.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
