Job summary

SCHOOLFIELD ELEM in Danville, Virginia, seeks a Head Custodian to oversee custodial staff and maintain safe, clean school facilities for students, staff and visitors. Under the Principal’s supervision, the Head Custodian is responsible for assisting in supervision and maintaining a productive, secure environment.

The role requires knowledge of cleaning equipment and methods, the ability to organize daily duties, and responsiveness during emergencies or snow removal.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the supervision of Custodians.
• Perform routine semi-skilled custodial work in the care and cleaning of school buildings.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with site staff, parents and visitors, officials and employees.
• Organize daily activities and maintain scheduled duties.
• Must be able to lift and/or move 25 lbs
• Knowledge on usage of custodial equipment including buffer, side by side, scrubber, hygienic a machine, and wet vac.
• Sweep or dust mop floors daily in assigned area.
• Vacuum carpets daily and/or shampoo carpets as needed to maintain in good condition.
• Scrub and clean toilets including mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, sinks, etc., and ensure restrooms are properly supplied.
• Dust furniture, walls, window sills, baseboards, chalk trays, and other woodworks, including those that require ladders.
• Wash walls, woodwork, blinds, etc., including those that require ladders.
• Clean drinking fountains.
• Clean and polish brass or other metal fixtures.
• Clean any area as required for accidents and illnesses, including during lunch periods.
• Move furniture as required and supervise the set-up of special events.
• Spray, buff, scrub, strip, and refinish all types of floors.
• Secure buildings.
• Remove trash from building and place in dumpster.
• Replace light bulbs in overhead fixtures, including those needing ladders.
• Shovel snow, cut grass, trim shrubbery, etc.
• Maintain availability 24 hours a day if necessary due to emergency or snow removal operations.
• Ensure all custodial equipment is clean and well maintained.
• Ensure all storage rooms are clean and organized.
• Maintain building in a safe, clean condition and report needed repairs or any emergency/safety issue to Building Principal and Maintenance Staff by way of a work order.
