Basic Function

Under direction of an administrator or manager, maintains an assigned group of classrooms, restrooms, offices, and related facilities in a clean and orderly manner; maintains the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of assigned District/college buildings and facilities; ensures that cleaning assignments are completed in a timely manner; performs technical responsibilities related to floor care, repair, and basic restoration of flooring surfaces throughout the District and college sites. The Custodian classification works regular, day, swing, and graveyard shifts.

Representative Duties
  • Inspects and monitors the quality and condition of all flooring surfaces throughout the District and college sites on a daily basis; identifies, records, and reports areas in need of additional cleaning, sanitizing, or repair.
  • Performs standard and routine floor care duties including but not limited to sweeps, mops, and vacuums floors, rugs, and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other work areas.
  • Performs technical floor care for a variety of flooring types including but not limited to wood, tile, laminate, carpet, and concrete surfaces; determines the type of materials, chemicals, solutions, and equipment needed to strip, refinish, buff, wax, polish, power wash, extract, mop, shampoo, scrub, clean, vacuum, clean and sanitize floors based on the type and condition of flooring surfaces.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms including but not limited to floors, walls, fixtures, appliances, and mirrors; restocks supplies, polishes metal fixtures, and cleans drinking fountains.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of floor care equipment and tools including but not limited to refinishers, buffers, waxers, scrubbers, extractors, vacuums, and power washers.
  • Ensures equipment is in proper working condition; notifies supervisor or Custodial Lead of any necessary equipment repair and/or maintenance needs.
  • Performs minor, routine, and/or non-technical repairs and maintenance of equipment; maintains equipment and supplies in proper working condition; reports need for more technical repairs; may make repair arrangements with internal departments based on contracted or standard warranties.
  • Performs minor, routine, non-technical repairs to buildings and fixtures including replacing lights; reports other repair and maintenance needs as appropriate.
  • Identifies and utilizes appropriate cleaning, disinfecting, and sanitizing solutions and methods in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
  • Cleans and sanitizes other areas of assignment including but not limited to windows, walls, ceilings, restrooms, and furniture, as needed.
  • Reports and resolves any issues, concerns, or problems related to floor care or custodial services; escalates concerns, problems, or more complex issues to the Custodian Lead or management for assistance and/or guidance.
  • Washes windows, whiteboards, blackboards, furniture, and walls; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles; sweeps sidewalks; picks up paper, trash, and debris; picks up trash containers and empties into large receptacle bins.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to the proper and safe storage and disposal of all cleaning chemicals and solutions.
  • Performs basic security duties related to building and grounds safety during assigned times; turns lights on and off; unlocks, locks, and secures doors and windows; notifies appropriate management and staff of District, college, and/or building issues and/or areas of concern.
  • Updates and maintains department records and files according to established guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Follows Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) guidelines in the execution of duties related to the area of assignment; references Safety Data Sheets, when needed.
  • Takes, tracks, and maintains an inventory of department equipment and supplies; assists with ordering equipment, supplies, and materials as needed; makes recommendations to supervisor and/or manager related to the purchasing of custodial equipment.
  • Assists in moving, arranging, and setting up furniture and equipment for special events, meetings, and/or District/college activities; assists with setting up canopies, tables, and chairs for events; assists with removing old tables, chairs, and desks from classrooms and places them in surplus.
  • Assists with set up, tear down, and moving of furniture, equipment, canopies, tables, chairs, and/or other needs at the request of District or college staff and management for special events or office and/or furniture moves within the District or college sites; assists with the removal of old furniture, tables, chairs, and desks from classrooms, offices, conference rooms, labs, and other District of college locations to surplus locations, as requested and/or needed.
  • Assists custodial and maintenance staff, as needed.
  • Performs a variety of clerical responsibilities in support of the department’s day-to-day activities and/or operations utilizing a variety of communication modalities including but not limited to answers and responds to phone calls, emails, text messages, and chat platforms; opens, screens, and distributes mail and correspondence; photocopies documents and requests duplication services; ensures maintenance and repairs of assigned work areas, facilities, or equipment; enters various requests for services from IT, Facilities, and Maintenance; contacts vendors for equipment service, when needed; follows-up with vendors to ensure satisfactory completion of requests; may perform simple repairs or maintenance to standard office equipment.
  • Attends and participates in meetings, trainings, workshops, and/or professional development opportunities, as appropriate.
  • May be required to travel to other sites to perform custodial services related to the area of assignment.
  • May provide work direction or guidance to Custodial staff, student assistants, student workers, and short-term, temporary staff, as needed.
  • To ensure that important operations and functions run seamlessly, the department’s employees may be required to assist with occasional duties, cross-functional assignments, or cross-departmental support. Training will be provided when necessary.
  • Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge and Abilities

  • District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
  • California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.

  • Modern cleaning methods, including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, blackboards, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures.
  • Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Proper mixing and dilution of cleansers, disinfectants and stripping agents and disposal of chemicals after use.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures pertaining to the area of assignment.
  • Record-keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing systems methods and techniques.
  • Proper use of chemicals and techniques for floor care.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and standards for the prevention, containment, and elimination of blood borne pathogens, viruses, and other potentially infectious materials including proper disposal of biohazard waste.
  • Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations and District policies and practices pertinent to the area of responsibility.

Education and Experience
  • High school graduate or General Educational Development ( GED ) ; AND
  • Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed.
  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position.
  • Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
License Certificates/Credentials

May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position. If operating a vehicle, must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver’s license.

Employees work in an indoor and outdoor environment; subject to frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), carrying, pushing, and pulling; employees are subject to fumes from cleaning chemicals; subject to exposure to biological conditions which may be unhealthful or hazardous; employees in this classification are assigned to work during swing and evening shift hours. Employees may be required to work occasional weekends or holidays.

Position Description

Applications are currently being accepted for Custodian position. This is a full-time 100% 12-month position. The days and hours are Monday – Friday 12:00PM – 8:30PM (Swing Shift).
