General Job Description:
Under the supervision of the head custodian, building principal, and director of facilities and transportation, the custodian's primary responsibility is to maintain a safe, clean, and healthy environment at the assigned facility by providing custodial, janitorial, and maintenance services to support full educational use of school facilities for students, staff, parents, and the community.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Two years of custodial experience preferred.
- Ability to maintain effective and professional relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and department members.
- Some heavy lifting and physical labor required, including lifting/moving a minimum of 50 pounds regularly and up to 90 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to understand and follow directions in English.
- Proper handling of chemical cleaners and supplies following manufacturer’s directions.
- Availability to work during school holidays, weekends, evenings, and overtimes during inclement weather as directed.
- Demonstrates cooperativeness and helpfulness.
- Experience and education combination will be considered.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Maintain the grounds surrounding the school.
- Meet regularly with the head custodian to coordinate janitorial and custodial services.
- Follow and implement safe work practices, wearing appropriate protective equipment.
- Perform general cleaning and maintenance of the school building, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing.
- Assist with snow removal from driveways, parking lots, bus areas, sidewalks, and entrances.
- Maintain supplies and equipment needed for cleaning.
- Ensure building safety and security, including final security checks at shift end.
- Oversee the general fire safety of the school.
- Sanitize restroom fixtures according to district criteria.
- Remove refuse and place it in outside containers.
- Set up chairs, tables, etc., for events and daily lunches.
- Communicate effectively with staff, students, and the school community.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the head custodian, principal, or director of facilities and transportation.
