A leading school district in California is seeking a dedicated Custodian to maintain cleanliness and safety in school facilities. The role involves cleaning restrooms, classrooms, and offices while ensuring adherence to safety protocols. Most permanent positions in this class are assigned to work eight (8) hours per day, five (5) days a week, twelve (12) months a year. Most newly hired employees in the class are assigned to work in the evening. An eligibility list is being established to fill current vacancies, hire substitutes, and fill future vacancies for the next six months.

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, cleans and maintains buildings and facilities, including restrooms, classrooms, offices, cafeterias, and libraries; performs general grounds and building maintenance; makes minor mechanical repairs; and secures buildings and facilities.
Employees in this class follow well-established procedures and schedules. Good judgment is required. Custodial work also requires concentration to maintain awareness of safety hazards such as lifting heavy items, using motorized equipment and chemicals, and working alone at night, etc.
The class of Custodian is distinguished from the class of Grounds Maintenance Worker in that the latter is almost exclusively involved in grounds work (e.g., mowing, trimming trees/bushes, edging lawns and operating grounds equipment), whereas Custodians perform minimal grounds work duties (e.g., raking leaves, watering plants, weeding) in relation to their overall job activities.

Graduation from high school or its equivalency is desirable.
Custodial experience and/or custodial training is highly desirable.
A valid Class C, California Driver License and use of a private automobile may be required for some positions in this class and must be maintained during employment.
Employees work both inside and outside in changing temperatures, including below 50° and over 90°, in dry, poorly ventilated, poorly lit, wet or damp areas, confined spaces, at heights using ladders or scaffolding, with electrical hazards, machinery with moving parts, sharp objects, fumes, silica or allergenic dust, lead, gases, chemicals, odors, vibrations, water, contagious illnesses, and in direct contact with the public and staff, often without direct supervision.
Employees must stand, walk, push, pull, lift (up to 50 lbs., up to 100 lbs. with assistance), climb ladders/stairs, maintain balance, stoop, kneel, crawl, bend, use hands/arms/legs simultaneously, reach overhead, and operate vehicles and equipment. Hearing, speaking clearly, and using a computer, phone, and radio are also required.
The examination may include a job-related written test and a performance/structured interview.

New hires are usually placed at Step A. Requests for advanced placement are subject to approval by the Personnel Director, based on eligibility and regulations. Placement is only upon initial hire.
Candidates passing all testing hurdles will be ranked and placed on an eligibility list for six months. Top candidates will be referred for interviews. Employment is contingent upon passing physical, TB test, background check, and providing work authorization.
Employees serve a probationary period of at least six months or 130 days. Permanent status requires completion of probation. A fingerprinting and background clearance are also required before employment.
A fee of approximately $64 for fingerprinting must be paid via money order at the time of employment.
Veterans with at least 30 days of active service during wartime or national emergency, or disabled veterans, may receive additional points on their score, upon providing Form DD214. Credit is only applied at initial hire.
