Floating Custodian Vacancy Announcement

Position Overview

Johnston County Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Floating Custodian to join our Facilities team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning learning environment across multiple school locations. The Floating Custodian will be responsible for specialized cleaning, light maintenance, and supporting school operations through reliable service and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform high-level cleaning tasks using ladders or scissor lifts (vents, AC ductwork, gym ceilings, band room sound boards, etc.).

• Replace and maintain ceiling tiles, light fixtures, and convert lighting systems to LED when needed.

• Clean windows and ledges at elevated heights.

• Safely transport and set up scissor lifts and other custodial equipment across multiple school sites.

• Load, unload, and secure equipment for transport between schools.

• Use proper cleaning methods, tools, and supplies to maintain a safe and sanitary environment.

• Assist with small repairs and general maintenance as needed.

• Enter work orders and complete reports in the district’s work order system.

• Communicate effectively with school administration and facilities supervisors.

• Attend required workshops and training to enhance job knowledge and skills.

• Identify and report damages, safety concerns, or repair needs promptly.

• Follow OSHA regulations, safety practices, and district policies at all times.

• Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and the district’s core values: caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, customer service, and valuing diversity.

• Perform other duties as assigned to support district operations.

Qualifications & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Minimum of one (1) year custodial or facility maintenance experience preferred.

• Experience with electrical or light maintenance work is a plus.

• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

• Knowledge of Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and ability to use work order software.

• Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform medium to heavy lifting: up to 100 lbs occasionally, 50 lbs frequently, and 25 lbs continuously.

• Ability to work at elevated heights using ladders or scissor lifts.

• Willingness and ability to travel to multiple school sites across the district on a regular basis.

• Ability to work in varied environments and conditions.
