Job summary

Bexar County is hiring a Custodian - C to perform general custodial duties and help maintain clean and safe facilities in San Antonio, TX. Under general supervision, you will dust, mop, vacuum, sanitize, clean restrooms and kitchens, restock supplies, and support daily operations.

You must have a High School diploma or GED, be able to operate cleaning equipment, and demonstrate reliability and teamwork. This full-time role offers a competitive pay rate and benefits aligned with county policies.

Responsibilities

• Report needs to Custodial Supervisor and submit work orders as needed.
• Promote safety and environmental practices in the workplace.
• Demonstrate proper use of cleaning solutions and replenish carts.
• Adapt cleaning to facility requirements and seasonal/project needs.
• Deliver exceptional services and meet custodial guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Summary

Under general supervision, performs custodial duties and ensures sanitation control.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs general, routine custodial duties, to include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, cleaning restrooms/kitchens, and restocking of supplies as needed
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal
• Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas
• Reports needs and concerns to Custodial Supervisor, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels; responsible for reporting concerns related to Bexar County buildings and facilities
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
• Demonstrates safe and proper use of chemical/cleaning solutions and replenishing of housekeeping carts
• Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements
• All staff members share responsibility for delivering exceptional services and ensuring custodial guidelines are met
• Perform other job‑related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

• High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, or six (6) months of general housekeeping, custodian, or janitorial experience
• Good knowledge of policies, practices, procedures and methods of custodial and sanitation functions; good knowledge of safety standards and practices
• Skill in operating cleaning equipment, such as buffers, strippers, waxers, vacuums, carpet cleaning machines; cleaning windows, dusting furniture, and unstopping toilets
• Ability to perform a variety of maintenance functions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, department heads, County employees, outside agencies/vendors and the public
• Must maintain appropriate level of confidentiality in all business and facility interactions
• Must be able to work non‑traditional hours to include evenings and weekends
• Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office
• Must clear a pre‑employment physical and a pre‑employment drug screen test
