Job Description

NATURE OF WORK:

An employee hired for this position performs a variety of manual work duties daily to assist in keeping the location clean and maintained. The employee also would be responsible for performing recurring tasks in accordance with established practices and cleaning schedules. If a problem or issue arises, this employee will assist the direct supervisor or administrator. Supervision is direct with frequent inspections to assure completion of assignments in accordance with instructions given and standards of cleanliness.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Cleaning practices that include but are not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, polishing floors, dusting, etc.
  • Assisting in moving or arranging furniture
  • Washing windows, walls, or other surfaces as needed.
  • Replenishing tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens, and classroom facilities.
  • Emptying waste baskets and other trash receptacles.
  • Locking and unlocking doors as needed.
  • Sorting/storing materials for recycling programs.
  • Reporting to supervisor any damages or needed repairs.
  • Keeping location clear of litter of any kind.
  • Assisting in controlling the heating and air equipment at location.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NEEDED:

  • Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.
  • Some skill in the use of small equipment used in routine cleaning.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BUS LICENSE

Requirements: Must be 21 years of age with HS diploma or GED; possess a valid Class A or B with a “P” and “S” endorsement; meet vision and hearing requirements; acceptable driving record; must be insurable; must pass background and pre-employment drug screen.

  1. Conduct a thorough pre-trip (using the school's Daily Bus Inspection form) and post trip inspection of the school bus.
  2. Keep exterior mirrors clean and adjusted at all times.
  3. Perform a minimum of one school bus evacuation drill each school year utilizing appropriate emergency procedures per semester. (This must be documented in the checklist log)
  4. Know, recognize, and obey road signs and signals by meanings, shapes, sounds, and colors.
  5. Keep interior of the bus clean.
  6. Maintain routes and schedules as planned by the local school board.
  7. Report any hazards along the existing route to appropriate school officials.
  8. Exercise effective defensive driving skills of self-control, alertness, foresight, and good judgment at all times while operating the school bus.
  9. Maintain discipline on the school bus without jeopardizing safety while driving.
  10. Complete all reports on bus discipline, bus maintenance and any other reports required by the school board.
  11. Remain alert at all times to hazards, including but not limited to poor weather conditions, other vehicles, road conditions and trains at railroad crossings.
  12. The driver shall not, at any time, permit students to stand in the step well or loading area or where the student could likely fall out of the bus, if the rear emergency door was opened, or where the driver's view is obscured.
  13. At such time, as required by law and/or the school, the employee agrees to one mandatory drug test as part of the hiring process. In addition to the mandatory test, the employee agrees to random test(s) and post accident testing and to be tested if recommended by the driver’s supervisor.

Special Requirement: The ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina school bus driver's license may be required as a condition of employment for certain assignments within this classification. Assignment requirements are determined by school and district operational needs and may change at any time. Employees may be assigned, reassigned, or transferred to positions requiring bus-driving responsibilities and, when directed by the district, will be expected to obtain and maintain the required licensure within established timelines.
