Job description

Bradford Woods is Indiana University's premier outdoor center, located just 30 minutes north of the Bloomington campus. Spanning 2,500 acres of pristine Indiana forest, Bradford Woods offers transformative outdoor experiences to over 16,000 visitors annually through programs like retreats, environmental education, and community events. Job Summary

The Custodian at Bradford Woods will play a key role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our facilities, including cabins, public spaces, and staff areas. This position supports a variety of programs such as retreats, environmental education, and community events, ensuring that all areas are prepared to the highest standards. By helping maintain a welcoming environment, the Custodian will contribute to the overall experience for visitors and staff, supporting our mission to provide enriching outdoor opportunities for all who visit.
Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of cabins, public restrooms, kitchens, and meeting spaces.
  • Sets up and breaks down rooms and areas for retreats, educational programs, and events.
  • Manages waste disposal and recycling throughout the facility.
  • Performs seasonal cleaning tasks, including window washing and deep cleaning.
  • Replaces lightbulbs and make minor repairs to facility infrastructure as needed.
  • Ensures outdoor areas, including trails and paths, are free from hazards and well-maintained.
  • Stocks and maintains cleaning supplies, notifying supervisor when inventory is low.
  • Assists with preparing facilities for high-use periods, ensuring readiness for programs and events.
General Responsibilities
  • Cleans floors, ramps, and stairs by sweeping, wet mopping/dust mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming them. Services, cleans, and supplies restrooms. Gathers and empties recycling and trash. Cleans and polishes fixtures. Replaces light bulbs. Cleans windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees. Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, machines, and equipment. Steam cleans or shampoos carpets. Strips, seals, finishes, and polishes floors. Cleans, replaces, and hangs blinds, drapes, and entrance mats. Collects and delivers soiled items.
  • Clears sidewalks, drives, and adjacent areas. Shovels snow.
  • Locks, unlocks, and secures buildings. Maintains awareness of building sand facilities, reports abnormalities or security concerns. Identifies and reports needed building repairs.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Assists with snow removal activities as necessary.

  • Ability to follow safe work practices in biohazard and/or hazardous waste clean-up (i.e. blood borne pathogens; toxic, reactive, explosive and ignitable laboratory wastes, corrosive wastes from cleaning operations; other miscellaneous wastes from across campus). May involve training and tests in hazardous waste management
  • Ability to interact and communicate with a wide variety of people

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to remain stationary for periods of time and move about the workplace for extended durations. The position involves effective communication and the operation of machinery, tools, and controls. It also requires physical mobility, including the ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairs, as well as positioning oneself in low-level positions. The role may require detecting various chemicals and gases, accessing rooftops, and navigating tight spaces to perform inspections. The individual must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
Additionally, this role requires availability during inclement weather (e.g., snow and ice) to ensure needs are met during weather emergencies.

Work Hours

This is a 12 month, 40-hour per week appointment that requires flexibility in schedule in order to accommodate program events.
