Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the A.E. Finley YMCA Facilities Director, this position works closely with contracted services and YMCA staff to ensure all areas of the building are kept clean and orderly. This includes indoor areas such as restrooms, locker rooms, office spaces, hallways, and fitness areas, as well as outdoor areas like sidewalks, natural common areas, parking lots, day camp grounds, sports fields, and shelters.

The Custodian is responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the mission, goals, and policies established by the YMCA's administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions with participants, parents, staff, and leadership.
  • Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within the area of responsibility.
  • Maintains a safe environment through attention to detail.
  • Ensures the YMCA is attractive and clean by completing duties on the daily schedule, including wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning, painting, vacuuming, seasonal lawn care, snow removal, and general cleaning.
  • Operates related motorized and non-motorized equipment.
  • Records and reports all needed repairs; performs repairs as directed.
  • Ensures the building and property are secure during shifts and reports incidents and hazards to the supervisor.
  • Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies as needed.
  • May set up furniture for events.
  • Works nights and weekends as needed to support staffing shifts.
  • Responsible for ordering and stocking supplies to maintain facility readiness.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Six months or more of related experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Ability to report and record maintenance requests.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
  • Basic understanding of equipment upkeep and care.
  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to work independently, plan, and organize.
  • Must obtain YMCA certification in Basic Life Support/First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen within the first 30 days of hire.
  • Multilingual skills are a plus but not required.
