Job summary

The City of Moses Lake is seeking a Custodian to perform custodial care and cleaning of City buildings, with a Monday–Friday evening shift and an alternate Friday–Tuesday or Thursday–Sunday schedule. The role includes floor care, restroom sanitation, and asset-management data entry.

The position requires instruction-following, time management and basic math at high school level, plus the ability to pass a background check. Work is performed across City facilities with safety as a priority.

Qualifications

  • Read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with high school or equivalent.
  • Apprenticeship/internship or similar custodial experience (1–2 years) for practical understanding of essential functions.
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Able to pass a background check including references and criminal history.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, sanitizes and restocks restrooms; sweeps and mops floors.
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles; replaces liners.
  • Enter information into work order software to track inventory and tasks.
  • Clean and maintain floors, including bamboo floors; vacuum and polish surfaces.
  • Sanitize door handles, handrails, light switches, tables, countertops.
  • Polish and sanitize water fountains and public entrances.
  • Change light bulbs and maintain light fixtures.
  • Washes and dries laundry.
  • Check the security of doors and gates.
  • Clean and pressure wash building exteriors.
  • Dust and polish furniture, blinds and sills; wash windows and walls.

Job Description

This position is responsible for the custodial care and cleaning of City buildings. The normal shift for this position will be Monday through Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. There is an alternate shift for this position, which will be 6:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday through Sunday or 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday through Tuesday. The work location for this position includes all City buildings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks restrooms; sweeps and mops floors.
  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles; replaces liners.
  • Enters information into work order software to track inventory, labor, and completed tasks.
  • Sweeps, mops, shampoos, waxes, and vacuums floors; cleans and maintains bamboo floors.
  • Cleans and sanitizes door handles, handrails, light switches, tables, countertops, etc.
  • Polishes and sanitizes water fountains.
  • Cleans all public access entranceways.
  • Changes light bulbs and cleans light fixtures.
  • Washes, dries, and replaces laundry.
  • Checks the security of doors and gates.
  • Cleans and pressure washes building exteriors.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture, blinds, and windowsills.
  • Washes windows, walls, and baseboards.
  • Reports repair needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Works with personal electronic devices to input and retrieve data for asset management and scheduling.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the use of various cleaning chemicals.
  • Skill in operating such cleaning equipment as a vacuum cleaner, burnishers, wet vac, pressure washer, laundry equipment, etc.
  • Skill in following instructions.
  • Skill in prioritizing work.
  • Skill in time management.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Custodial Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The crew lead spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include supervisory instructions and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of related custodial duties. The need to manage time well contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the custodial maintenance of City buildings. Successful performance contributes to the provision of clean and attractive facilities for employees and the general public.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other City employees, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in City buildings and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the essential functions of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one (1) to two (2) years.
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history
    checks, or other.
