Position Title: Custodian (52 Weeks) - Bow Elementary

Location: Bow Elementary-Middle School

Salary: $16.71/hr

Reports to: Lead Custodian

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

Benefits Eligibility: Yes

Telecommuting Eligibility: Site-based. Not eligible for telecommuting

Position Summary

In accordance with the Agreement between American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced:

DPSCD is seeking an experienced individual to fill the above-stated 52-week custodian position. The individual must have a strong desire to assist the District in maintaining a clean and safe environment for students across various school locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED certificate.
  • If no valid Michigan (Interim) Occupation Education Certificate, a minimum of five (5) years industry experience within the last 2 years.
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and floor care machines.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and adapt to changing duties.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Ability to read and understand hazards related to chemicals.

Essential Functions

  • Work Monday through Friday, with some weekend hours supporting Community Use of Schools.
  • Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas, including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and replenishing supplies.
  • Ensure doors and gates are secured and alarms are active.
  • Conduct weekly quality inspections with Lead Custodian.
  • Assist in pest control efforts and maintain a clean environment.
  • Perform minor repairs and report major issues.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to service requests.
  • Maintain confidentiality of personnel and student information.
  • Support groundskeeping and waste disposal tasks.
  • Follow all health and safety policies, including training in bloodborne pathogens, AHERA, IPM, and hazard communication.

Security Clearance

Internal applicants do not need a new background check unless role requirements change. External applicants will undergo a criminal background check upon hire.
