Job summary

The Western Connecticut Mental Health Network (WCMHN) within the State of Connecticut DMHAS is seeking a Custodian to perform custodial and janitorial duties at our Torrington facility and transition housing program. This full-time role runs Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

at 249 Winsted Rd, Torrington, CT. Responsibilities include cleaning, trash disposal, minor maintenance, snow removal, and space setup.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Run errands and assist with space setup or classroom arrangements.

What You Will Do

• Perform routine cleaning tasks including dusting, mopping, sweeping, sanitizing, and washing surfaces such as windows, woodwork, walls, furniture, and equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness in offices, bathrooms, kitchens, common areas, and outdoor areas around buildings.
• Collect and dispose of trash, report repair needs, and perform minor maintenance tasks.
• Run errands as assigned.
• Inspect buildings for damage and report conditions to the supervisor.
• Change light bulbs, replace fuses, and perform simple fixes such as lubricating or tightening hinges, drawers, and cabinets.

The Western Connecticut Mental Health Network (WCMHN) was formed in 1996 by the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), in order to coordinate clinical, fiscal and administrative oversight of Region 5 contracted and state-operated mental health services. Within this service system, there are three state-operated Local Mental Health Authorities, which are located in Waterbury, Danbury and Torrington. In partnership with the Western Connecticut Mental Health Network they provide and coordinate local clinical services. Over 200 staff including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation, vocational and mental health workers provide services for persons with a long-term mental illness. Our mission is to provide a comprehensive and effective recovery-oriented system of mental health and addiction services that promotes self-sufficiency, dignity, cultural sensitivity and respect.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings.

Examples of Duties

• Performs custodial tasks and maintenance of areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wards, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories including outdoor areas (i.e. trash around buildings);
• Dusts, mops, sweeps, scrubs, strips, waxes and polishes floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers;
• Washes, dusts and polishes glass including windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment;
• Makes beds;
• Checks, marks, stores and issues linens, blankets, and clothing (limited to individual’s work area not to include counting and inspection for a larger area);
• Collects and counts soiled laundry;
• Distributes, empties and sterilizes glassware, wash basins and bedpans;
• Sweeps walks;
• Collects and disposes of trash;
• Reports needs for repairs;
• Performs minor maintenance;
• Runs errands;
• Inspects buildings for damage and reports conditions to supervisor;
• May change light bulbs and replace fuses;
• May lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.;
• May replace ceiling or floor tiles;
• May remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways around buildings;
• May sand and salt stairways and walkways;
• May move furniture and/or set-up classrooms;
• Performs related duties as required.

Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements

• Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
• A physical examination may be required.

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
