Job summary

Whitehall City Schools in Ohio seeks a dedicated custodian to maintain district facilities in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition that supports student learning. You will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, and assist with event setup, while adhering to health, safety, and building regulations.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED, ability to lift up to 75 pounds, and successful background checks. This is a non-exempt, classified position with practical overtime as needed.

  • Ability to perform routine building maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain good health, physical stamina, fitness and vitality.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain building cleanliness and sanitation in compliance with health department standards.
  • Perform daily cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and common areas.
  • Conduct minor maintenance repairs consistent with training.
  • Monitor building safety and report hazards promptly.
  • Secure building in accordance with district safety procedures (ORC 3313.539 School Safety requirements).
  • Support district safety initiatives and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Snow removal as needed.
  • Assist with event setup and building use.
  • Respond professionally to staff, students, families, vendors, and members of the public.
  • Provide custodial support in areas normally assigned to other custodial staff when absences, vacancies, workload demands, or operational needs require shared responsibility for maintaining district facilities.
  • Assist in delivery equipment and materials around the District.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the position.

Employment Status: Classified employee under ORC 3319.081

Terms of Employment: Salary, work calendar, and benefits in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

Job Goal / Purpose

To maintain district facilities in a clean, sanitary, safe, and operational condition that supports student learning and complies with state health, safety, and building regulations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Successful BCI/FBI background check per ORC 3319.39.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safe handling procedures (OSHA compliance).
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to perform routine building maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain good health, physical stamina, fitness and vitality.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Maintain building cleanliness and sanitation in compliance with health department standards.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands
  • Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, and extended standing.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and maintenance equipment.
  • Indoor and outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Possible call-in work on evenings, weekends, or emergency response (per Article 30 of Master Agreement)
Evaluation

Performance shall be evaluated in accordance with Board policy and the applicable collective bargaining agreement governing classified employees (ORC 3319.081).

Compliance and Employment Conditions

This position is classified employment under Ohio Revised Code §3319.081 unless otherwise specified. Employment is subject to all applicable provisions of the Ohio Revised Code, State Board of Education requirements, federal regulations, Board of Education policies, administrative guidelines, and applicable collective bargaining agreements.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of criminal background checks in accordance with ORC §3319.39 and ongoing compliance with licensure, certification, and training requirements applicable to the position.

The employee must comply with all district safety procedures, including requirements under ORC §3313.539 (School Safety and Emergency Management Plans), and all applicable health and workplace safety standards.
