Job summary

OBJECTIVES

Under the supervision of the , Facilities Crew Chief performs various custodial duties in the Town Hall, Town Hall Annex, Public Works Department, Parks and Recreation Building, State Police Offices, Hall Memorial Library, Old Crystal Lake Schoolhouse, Tedford Park Pavilion Bathrooms, Crystal Lake Beach Bathrooms, and the Ellington Senior Center, as assigned by the Facilities Crew Chief, including cleaning offices, bathrooms and other facilities. Empties wastebaskets, vacuums/sweeps/mops floors, cleans furniture, shelves, etc. Performs other manual work as required, including care of night meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs routine custodial cleaning of municipal facilities, including vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture; sweeping, mopping, and scrubbing floors; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms; washing windows and glass surfaces; and maintaining rugs and entry mats.
  • Cleans and dusts furniture, shelving, walls, windowsills, stairways, and other building surfaces; empties waste and recycling containers and removes refuse from facilities.
  • Performs floor care maintenance including stripping, sealing, waxing, and buffing floors, as well as carpet cleaning and shampooing as required.
  • Restocks and maintains custodial and restroom supplies including paper products, soap, and related materials; monitors supply levels and prepares lists of required cleaning and facility supplies for ordering.
  • Conducts routine building checks including inspection of mechanical areas and building systems such as boilers, furnaces, compressors, and HVAC equipment, and reports issues to appropriate staff.
  • Opens and secures municipal facilities as assigned, including unlocking doors, activating lighting and HVAC systems, and ensuring facilities are ready for occupancy and use.
  • Performs basic facility maintenance including replacing light bulbs, installing air filters, minor repairs to furniture and fixtures, basic carpentry tasks, painting, replacing floor tiles, and assembling or relocating furniture and equipment.
  • Assists with exterior facility maintenance including mowing lawns, watering landscaped areas, raking leaves, clearing brush, trimming bushes, power washing and maintaining building entrances and grounds.
  • Performs snow and ice removal from sidewalks, entrances, and walkways, including shoveling, de-icing, and maintaining safe access during winter conditions.
  • Assists with building safety and appearance by reporting hazards, monitoring facility conditions, and ensuring cleanliness and orderly operation of municipal buildings.
  • Daily mail pickup and delivery as assigned.
  • Maintains and displays flags in accordance with established protocols.
  • Perform other related custodial, maintenance, and facility support duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, chemicals, and equipment used in custodial cleaning and building maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge of the operation and basic monitoring of building mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning procedures and sanitation standards, including applicable health and safety practices related to restroom maintenance and public facilities.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain custodial equipment, hand tools, and light power equipment used in cleaning and facility/grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to identify routine maintenance issues and report them to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to perform physical work requiring standing, walking, lifting, bending, and other manual tasks for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and outdoor weather conditions when performing grounds maintenance or snow removal.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and building occupants.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to support facility operations, including evenings or occasional schedule adjustments for meetings or events.
  • Ability to successfully utilize the Microsoft suite of office products.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Ability to operate a vacuum cleaner, wet/dry vacuum, floor scrubber, snow blower, mowers, leaf blower and other light powered equipment; drives a Town vehicle to perform assignments.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL EFFORT

Performs heavy cleaning, scrubbing, lifting, shoveling, climbing ladders, scaffolds, etc., standing for a long period of time while using a vacuum cleaner, pushing a wet/dry mop, using a buffing machine and/or wet/dry vacuum.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum)

Graduation from high school plus up to three (3) months of related experience, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position is part of a custodial staff that operates on multiple shifts to support municipal facility operations. Currently, the Town maintains two custodial shifts. Employees may be assigned to either shift based on operational needs and may be required to adjust schedules as necessary to support building use, meetings, special events, or weather-related operations.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
