Position Summary

The Custodian supports the district’s day-to-day operations by maintaining a clean, sanitary, orderly and safe workplace. Custodians perform all aspects of cleaning operations related to building operation, but not limited to customer service, cleaning, minor maintenance, completing proper forms and schedules, operation of equipment in a safe manner. Custodians maintain an assigned cleaning area and performs to standards of care established by the Office of Operations.

Description

The Custodian supports the district’s day-to-day operations by maintaining a clean, sanitary, orderly and safe workplace. Custodians perform all aspects of cleaning operations related to building operation, but not limited to customer service, cleaning, minor maintenance, completing proper forms and schedules, operation of equipment in a safe manner. Custodians maintain an assigned cleaning area and performs to standards of care established by the Office of Operations.

Essential Functions
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms/bathrooms using predefined cleaning methods and procedures.
  • Cleans, dusts, and wipes furniture; sweep, mop, and/or vacuum floors; empty/clean trash and recycling receptacles; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
  • Assists with the setup of facilities for meetings, classes, conferences, events, etc.
  • Strips, cleans, buffs and applies floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Uses and maintains assigned power equipment and hand tools; buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
  • Washes walls and equipment; uses ladders when required in work assignments.
  • Locks and unlocks assigned buildings: secures building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
  • Follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
  • Performs cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
  • Moves furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
  • Washes accessible interior and exterior windows. Cleans blinds. Launders cleaning rags and dust mops.
  • Attends to emergencies when necessary.
  • Handle recycling materials.
  • Assists in the instruction and supervision of student help.
  • Maintains a clean and organized storage area for cleaning equipment and supplies and keeps adequate stock of cleaning supplies.
  • Cares for lawns and shrubs; cleans sidewalks and driveways and removes ashes, snow, and ice.
  • Safely operates job related equipment.
  • Takes classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products, First Aid, CPR, and working relationships.
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position and actively supports the RUSD Strategic Plan
Supervision Received

Receives direction from the Head or Shift Engineer and the Assistant Director of Facilities Operations. The Custodian normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.

Supervision Exercised

Custodian does not supervise other staff but may work closely with the Head or Shift Engineer and Assistant Director of Facilities Operations. Custodian may assist in the instruction and supervision of student help and volunteers.

Work Environment
  • Busy work environment with multiple priorities and frequent interruptions. Work includes a commitment to irregular working hours, when needed.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents; sitting for extended periods of time; walking; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; intermittent bending, stooping or reaching overhead to retrieve or store materials; driving a vehicle to conduct business activities.
  • Primarily an indoor work environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials and construction equipment.
  • Most of the workday is spent walking, standing and lifting.
  • Job duties may require working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to perform using a full range of motions including standing, sitting, talking, hearing, and using hands and fingers to operate a computer and job-related equipment, intermittent bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling and reaching to execute job duties.
  • Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds assisted.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, scaffolding, ropes, poles and the like using feet/legs and/or hands/arms.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s). Entering text or data into a computer or other machine by means of a keyboard.
  • Complete heavy workload within established time frames.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds (e.g., machinery alarms, medical codes/alarms).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, mechanical areas where noise, heat and operating equipment are present.
