Job summary

Wilson County Schools Maintenance is seeking a reliable Custodian in Wilson, NC to perform general custodial and light groundskeeping tasks across school facilities. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing walls and windows, and keeping restrooms clean and stocked.

Under supervision, you will open and secure buildings, set up for events, arrange furniture, dispose of trash, and support minor maintenance as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • General knowledge of standard janitorial methods and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Sweep sidewalks and clean outside areas; remove debris.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and wax floors as needed.
  • Clean bathrooms; restock supplies.
  • Open/secure buildings at start and end of day.
  • Move furniture for meetings and events.
  • Perform minor maintenance on appliances.

Reports To: Principal or Assistant Principal

Terms of Employment: Permanent, 12 Month Position

Nature of Work

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etc. Work involves the transferring of equipment, custodial, instrument repair and audiovisual. Reports to the Assistant Principal or Principal. Substitute Custodian assignments will be defined as temporary and will be used as needed.

Qualifications and Licensure
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans bathrooms, including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, slop sinks, etc.
  • Fills tissue, towels, soap and other dispensers, disinfects as needed.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, window sills, blinds and other woodwork.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
  • Cleans drinking fountains.
  • Assembles, sets up and moves furniture as required.
  • Opens and secures buildings at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.
  • Cleans and organizes storage rooms.
  • Unloads and stores supplies and deliveries.
  • Raises and lowers flags at start and end of workday.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Prepares requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for the workweek.
  • Sets traps for rodents and other pests and discards trapped animals appropriately.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
  • Arranges furniture for meetings or other events as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Physical Requirements (if applicable)
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.
  • May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
Special Requirements (if applicable)
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Ability to read simple forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Must have a proven attendance record.
