Job summary

Lake County Government in Illinois is seeking a dedicated Custodian to perform cleaning and routine maintenance in county facilities. The position runs Monday through Friday from 5:00pm to 1:30am, requiring use of proper methods, materials, and equipment to maintain cleanliness and sanitation.

You will input work orders, receive assignments from theBranch Manager and Lead, check restrooms, and manage expendables.

Qualifications

  • One year of custodial work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license or State ID.
  • Background screening including LEADS approval may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and perform tasks from work orders and input them into the computer system.
  • Receive assignments from Branch Manager and Lead; ensure timely completion.
  • Check public restrooms to ensure they are stocked and clean.
  • Clean up spills in public areas and maintain stock levels of expendables.
  • Drive a county or personal vehicle as needed.
  • Follow safety procedures and use appropriate cleaning methods.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job description

The Custodian general function will be to perform custodial care and cleaning of public buildings and equipment. Work involves the performance of cleaning and routine maintenance as assigned. They will be responsible for using proper methods, materials and equipment in cleaning and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings and equipment. This position will work Monday through Friday from 5:00pm -1:30am and requires medium work involving standing or walking all of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis. Depending on the assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, and perform related duties as assigned:

  • Receive and perform tasks from work orders; input new and completed work orders into the appropriate computer system.
  • Receive work assignments and orders from Branch Manager and Lead, ensuring assignments are completed on time.
  • Check public restrooms to ensure they are stocked and clean.
  • Clean up spills in public areas.
  • Maintain stock levels of expendables.
  • Drive a county or personal vehicle.
  • Must have approved LEADS access to Sheriff's Office and Courts secured areas at all times.
  • All other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Skill in problem-solving and conflict resolution.
  • Skill in time management and attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate power scrubbers and sweepers.
  • Ability to work from oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to successfully use County-specific technology and general office software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally on job progress in overall assignments and responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and logically both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use tools, or equipment requiring basic instruction and experience such as tools and computers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organization managers and staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • One (1) year of experience in custodial work
  • Valid driver’s license or State Identification
  • Or any combination of work experience that provides the candidates possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties prescribed to the position (above).
Physical Demands and Hazards of the Position

Requires work involving standing or walking some of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurrent basis. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs, work standing for long periods of time, work in extreme environments. May be exposed to bright/dim lights, dust and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights. The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision and the ability to hear and speak to understand, respond to and build relationships with a diverse clientele. Color, depth and texture perception.

Other Requirements
  • Required to undergo criminal background screening including LEADS approval from Sheriff's Office.
