Overview

The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities

• Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnish floors, as well as vacuums and shampoos carpets, as applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces as assigned; removes and disposes of waste products daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
• Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of the facility, including but not limited to changing light bulbs, changing toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture.
• Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, including mowing, weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate.
• Opens or closes and secures the facility, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off lights and ensures grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
• Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew, works cooperatively in group situations, exhibits tact and consideration, displays positive outlook and pleasant manner, offers assistance and support to co-workers, and works actively to resolve conflicts.
• Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy.
• Possesses basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
• Performs any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work.
• Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Writes simple correspondence. Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations. Must possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
• Mathematical Skills: Add and subtract two-digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
• Reasoning Ability: Applies common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions. Deals with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
• Computer Skills: Internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as appropriate.
• Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: All new and current employees are encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
• Physical Demands: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending, and other activities; lifting up to 55 pounds; two-person lift for heavier items; various environmental conditions.
