Job description

Summary

The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets when applicable; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces as assigned; removes and disposes of waste daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non‑cleaning maintenance tasks of the facility, including changing light bulbs, toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities and meetings, and assembling or moving furniture.
  • Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program: mowing, weeding, trimming, fertilizing, plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal as appropriate.
  • Opens or closes and secures the facility, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems; turns lights on and off; ensures grounds are free of debris and hazards; responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Performs work duties independently or as part of a custodial crew; works cooperatively in group situations, exhibits tact and consideration; displays a positive outlook and pleasant manner; offers assistance and support to co‑workers and works to resolve conflicts.
  • Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of the Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader when absent or vacant.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large‑scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: New and current employees are encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
  • Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; writes simple correspondence; presents information in one‑on‑one and small group settings; possesses basic comprehensive skills of working English.
  • Mathematical Skills: Adds and subtracts two‑digit numbers; multiplies and divides with tens and hundreds; performs calculations with U.S. currency and measurements.
  • Reasoning Ability: Applies common‑sense understanding to execute simple instructions; handles standardized situations with occasional or no variables.
  • Computer Skills: Uses the internal HCPS email system and HCPS district website as required.
Physical Demands

The position requires standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crawling. Must lift up to 55 pounds; lifting over 55 pounds requires a two‑person lift. The work environment includes moderate noise, exposure to cleaning chemicals, and occasional contact with heavy equipment.
