Job summary

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL is seeking a part-time Custodian to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of buildings, facilities, and grounds. Responsibilities include sweeping, waxing, vacuuming, window cleaning, dusting exhibits, and collecting trash.

You will operate cleaning equipment and help ensure supplies are stocked and used safely. This is a will-train position requiring a high school diploma or equivalent, with shifts from 8am–5pm, 4pm–midnight, or noon–8pm.

Qualifications

• No experience is necessary - this is a will-train position.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.
• Physical requirements include standing, walking, climbing stairs and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Custodial duties to maintain cleanliness and appearance of Rocket Center buildings, facilities and grounds.
• Sweep, wax, vacuum, and shampoo floors; clean windows; dust exhibits.
• Collect trash and refuse; use a pressure washer for sidewalks and buildings.
• Move and transport equipment and supplies; ensure adequate custodial supplies.
• Operate cleaning equipment safely and follow policies; meet standards of custodial management.
• Work shifts as assigned (8am–5pm, 4pm–midnight, or noon–8pm).

Part-time. $15 an hour. Paid time off. Free museum tickets and discounts. The purpose of this position is to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of USSRC buildings, facilities and grounds.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

• Custodial Systems meet or exceed the expectations of the Custodial Manager for the cleanliness and appearance of Rocket Center buildings, facilities, and grounds. Work includes, but is not limited to:
• Sweep, wax, vacuum, and shampoo floors throughout the Rocket Center.
• Clean office and common area windows.
• Clean and dust the Rocket Center’s internal and external exhibits.
• Collect trash and refuse from offices and grounds.
• Use a pressure washer to clean sidewalks and buildings.
• Move and transport various equipment, materials, and waste promptly.
• Ensure that the Custodial department has adequate supplies necessary to conduct daily operations.
• Meet or exceed legal, industry, and professional standards for the use and disposal of cleaning chemicals and waste.
• Safely and efficiently operate the lift loft following written policies.
• Meet or exceed the expectations of the Custodial Management team for the accurate and timely completion of tasks and assignments.

Required Education

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

The Custodian is a physically demanding position. It has the following special requirements:

Physical Requirements

• Standing, walking, and climbing stairs for up to 8 hours.
• Carrying, and lifting supplies and items weighing up to 40 pounds to waist height.
• Bending, kneeling, reaching to store and retrieve supplies, cleaning high, and low areas, behind exhibits, etc.
• Inspecting, visually and physically, areas for cleanliness.
• Ability to communicate effectively with employees and guests.
• Working directly with cleaning chemicals such as bleach and floor stripper.
• Operating medium-weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors.
• Moving desks and furniture.

Eligibility Qualifications

• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work in a climate-controlled building environment, exposed to noisy and dusty areas.
• Work with dangerous and toxic cleaning products.
• Work includes cleaning up blood, saliva, and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with.
• This position may also involve working outside in various weather conditions.

Expected Hours of Work

Shifts are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 4 p.m. to midnight, and 12 noon to 8 p.m.
