Job summary

Family Focus is seeking a part-time Custodian in Evanston to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for children, families, staff, and visitors. The role covers classrooms, restrooms, kitchens, offices, and common areas to support daily operations and program activities.

The ideal candidate has a High School Diploma or GED, custodial experience, and the ability to work independently while communicating effectively with staff and families. Schedule: Mon–Fri 2:30 PM–6:30 PM.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain assigned areas of the facility, including classrooms, program spaces, offices, restrooms, kitchens, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust floors and surfaces, including corners and edges.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms and sanitize kitchen areas.
• Empty trash receptacles and restock supplies as needed.
• Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms for programs and meetings.
• Inspect entrances, exits, and hallways for cleanliness and safety hazards.

As a Custodian, you will help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the children, families, staff, and community members we serve. Your work will play an important role in ensuring our center is ready to support Family Focus programs and daily operations.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Clean and maintain assigned areas of the facility, including classrooms, program spaces, offices, cubicles, restrooms, kitchens, hallways, stairways, and common areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust floors and surfaces, including corners, edges, and areas around and under accessible furniture.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, countertops, mirrors, partitions, dispensers, and floors. Clean and disinfect toilets and urinals at least twice per shift, as assigned.
• Empty trash receptacles, replace liners, and transport garbage to designated disposal areas.
• Restock restroom, kitchen, and other designated supplies, including toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and trash liners.
• Clean and sanitize kitchen areas, including floors, countertops, tables, and other designated surfaces. Remove food debris and report leaks, pest activity, or damaged appliances.
• Clean and sanitize classrooms and program spaces, including tables, counters, furniture, and other designated surfaces, ensuring spaces are clean and ready for children's daily activities.
• Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, including door handles, light switches, railings, push plates, counters, and other shared-use areas.
• Perform weekly cleaning duties, including sweeping and mopping stairs; dusting accessible horizontal surfaces, windowsills, moldings, ledges, shelves, frames, and designated vents; cleaning restroom dispensers; and removing fingerprints, drips, spills, and marks from doors, frames, handles, and designated wall areas.
• Perform monthly detail cleaning, including damp wiping restroom tile walls, cleaning and disinfecting restroom partitions, and detailing carpet and tile edges and corners.
• Perform quarterly cleaning duties, including dusting ceiling vents and baseboards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for children, families, staff, and visitors while minimizing disruptions to daily operations and respecting personal property.
• Inspect entrances, exits, stairs, hallways, and walkways for cleanliness and potential safety hazards. Promptly report maintenance concerns, damaged fixtures, leaks, pest activity, supply shortages, and other facility issues to the appropriate supervisor.
• Properly use, handle, and maintain assigned cleaning equipment and approved cleaning products in accordance with established safety procedures.
• Assist with setting up and breaking down rooms and spaces for programs, meetings, and special events as needed.
• Help ensure the facility is clean, sanitary, safe, and ready for daily operations.
• Secure assigned areas at the end of the shift, as required.

The ideal candidate will have the following education and experience:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred.
• Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment.
• Ability to work independently and follow instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, families, and visitors.
• Availability to occasionally support events or meetings outside of regular business hours.

Hourly rate: $17.50/hour

This is a part-time non-exempt position.
