Position: School Custodian
Status: Full-Time & Part-Time positions available
Hours: Daylight, afternoon, and midnight shifts
Pay: $15.00 per hour
The Butler Area School District is hiring custodians in various school buildings. Full-time and part-time positions are available.
Position Summary: The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment in all areas of the school building and grounds. This role ensures that classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and other facilities are clean and sanitized. The custodian also supports general maintenance tasks to ensure a healthy and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Essential Functions:- Sweep, mop, vacuum, strips, waxes and buff floors in classrooms, hallways, offices, restrooms, and common areas using equipment such as brooms, dust mops, wet mops, vacuums, buffers and shampooers.
- Wash windows and glass doors, removing smudges and fingerprints.
- Uses chemical cleaners and strippers to perform cleaning tasks
- Empty trash bins from offices and other work areas, including the exterior of the building, and dispose of waste in a proper and timely manner.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including replenishing supplies (soap, toilet paper, paper towels). Mix cleaning solutions to appropriate strength.
- Dust and wipe down surfaces, furniture, and windows as needed.
- Cleans and maintains all carpet areas
- Clean and sanitize lunchrooms, cafeterias, and kitchens, ensuring a hygienic environment.
- Assist with moving furniture or equipment as needed.
- Lock and unlock doors as required, ensuring the building is secure when not in use.
- Maintain and organize custodial storage areas and cleaning supplies.
- Advises custodial supervisor of equipment issues and other building concerns
- Help with snow removal or other tasks related to maintaining the school grounds in all seasons
- Set up and tear down rooms for special events, assemblies, or meetings.
- Ensure that cleaning supplies and equipment are used according to safety guidelines.
- Adhere to school and district policies, including health and safety regulations, for cleaning and waste disposal.
- Report safety hazards or potential risks immediately to the appropriate personnel.
- Performs housekeeping and janitorial duties to maintain offices, classrooms, restrooms, hallways, and public areas in clean and orderly condition.
- Maintains the operation of the boiler in the building (elementary building only).
- Maintains janitorial supplies of the building.
- Tests swimming pool water and makes adjustments to the chemicals as needed: cleans and maintains pools as needed (secondary buildings only).
- Checks fire extinguishers to ensure proper functioning and notifies the supervisor of equipment needing repair.
- Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:- Ability to life and move heavy objects up to 50 lbs, including lifting overhead
- Climbs to 30 feet heights using ladders, scaffolding, etc.

- Frequent balancing, bending, twisting, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling

Minimum Qualifications:Skills, Experience and Education:- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred, especially in a school or institutional setting
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and perform physical tasks.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, and equipment.
- Demonstrates ability to work well with the public and staff.
- Demonstrates ability to read, write, and follow written and oral instructions to ensure safety.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to handle and dispose of cleaning supplies and chemicals safely.
- Ability to work a schedule with flexible start times depending on district needs
- Act 34, 151 and FBI clearances required upon employment
