Job summary

The Salvation Army Alton IL Corps is looking for a part-time Custodian to handle general maintenance and custodial duties at the 360 Life Center building and grounds, under the direct supervision of the Site Administrator.

This 27-hour-per-week role at 525 Alby St, Alton, IL includes housekeeping, minor repairs, grounds work, equipment maintenance, and preparing rooms for programs, with emphasis on safety, confidentiality, and a positive work environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Ability to read and comprehend a job description, cleaning instructions and MSDS.
• Basic communication skills to facilitate good communications between visitors and other employees.

Responsibilities

• Perform housekeeping duties including dusting, window washing, cleaning restrooms, trash removal, vacuuming, carpet cleaning, sweeping and mopping.
• Make minor repairs (e.g., change furnace filters, replace light switches/ballasts, faucets, doorknobs) and report major issues.
• Maintain Corps grounds including yard work, trash removal, snow removal, and lawn mowing.
• Maintain the overall appearance and functionality of all properties.
• Operate and maintain equipment and ensure vehicle maintenance.
• Prepare rooms for Corps programs, luncheons and meetings.
• Support confidentiality and Safe From Harm guidelines while interacting with clients.

The Salvation Army Alton IL Corps is looking for a Custodian. Under the direct supervision of the 360 Life Center Site Administrator, the Custodian is responsible for the general maintenance and custodial duties of the 360 Life Center building and grounds.

This is a part-time, 27 hours per week, $15.00 per hour.

Job Objective

This position is expected to advance and support the Mission of The Salvation Army. Under the direct supervision of the 360 Life Center Site Administrator, the Custodian is responsible for the general maintenance and custodial duties of the 360 Life Center building and grounds.

Essential Functions

• Perform housekeeping duties including: dusting, window washing, cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, vacuuming, spot carpet cleaning carpets, sweeping/mopping, etc.
• Make small or minor repairs (e.g., change furnace filters, replace light switches/ballasts; replace faucets, doorknobs, etc.) as necessary and bring major repairs to the 360 Life Center Site Administrator’s attention.
• Maintain Corps grounds to include yard work, trash removal, snow removal, lawn mowing and any additional outside repairs as necessary.
• Maintain the overall appearance and functionality of all properties
• Operate and maintain all equipment, and ensure vehicles receive proper and timely maintenance at the 360 Life Center.
• Keep maintenance rooms clean and in order.
• Complete maintenance and Corps furniture inventory.
• Prepare rooms for Corps programs, luncheons and other meetings.
• Participate in team training and development when necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality, proper boundaries with clients and comply with Salvation Army Safe From Harm guidelines.
• Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, visitors, co-workers and supervisor. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others’ property and person; and professional and appropriate communications to and about visitors, clients, co-workers and supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

• A High School Diploma or GED with one year related work experience. Combination of training and experience will be considered.
• Ability to read and comprehend a job description, cleaning instructions and material safety data sheet.
• Basic communication skills to facilitate good communications between visitors and other employees.
• Requires appropriate valid driver’s license (MO “E” or IL “D”) and must pass The Salvation Army MVR check.

Physical and Working Conditions

Capable of frequently lifting 30 pounds, occasionally lifting up to 100 pounds. Occasionally moves 100 pounds or more using dolly/cart/truck. Majority of lifting is from floor to waist height. Some lifting required above waist and shoulder high but it will be at a reduced weight. Position will have to bend, stoop, crouch, stand, walk, carry and push/pull items to accomplish this job. Occasionally climb a ladder to work (replace light bulbs, etc.). Some of this work will be outdoors and it will be cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
