Job summary

Kent State University is hiring for a Custodial Worker at the Tuscarawas Campus in New Philadelphia, OH. The role involves routine cleaning, maintenance, and setup for events. You will report to the Custodial Work Supervisor and Building/Grounds Supervisor.

Qualifications

• Identify threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax floors; shampoo carpets.
• Clean furniture, fixtures; wash walls; clean glass and drapes.
• Empty and clean trash receptacles.
• Change light bulbs and clean fixtures.
• Sanitize restrooms and replenished supplies.
• Move and arrange furniture for events or functions.
• Maintain a clean, orderly supply closet; report supply needs to supervisor.
• Assist with minor maintenance or painting as needed.
• Report evidence of fire, entry issues, or theft of property.
• Remove snow, ice; assist with mowing; pick up debris as needed.
• May train student or temporary employees.

Salary:

$15.41 hourly

Basic Function:

Performs custodial duties to provide for care, cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings, furniture, and fixtures according to established work rules. Reports to Custodial Work Supervisor, Building and Grounds Supervisor/Superintendent, or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

• Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes to renew floor surfaces; cleans and shampoos carpets.
• Cleans, dusts, and waxes furniture and fixtures; shampoos upholstered furniture; washes walls; cleans glass and mirrors; removes and hangs drapes.
• Empties and cleans trash receptacles.
• Changes light bulbs and cleans light fixtures.
• Scrubs, cleans, and sanitizes restrooms and shower facilities; replenishes supplies.
• Moves and arranges furniture and equipment; may set up rooms for functions and events.
• Maintains a clean and orderly supply closet; monitors supply levels and reports supply needs to supervisor.
• May perform minor maintenance; may assist with painting.
• Reports evidence of fire, illegal entry, and theft of property.
• May remove snow and ice from walkways; may assist with mowing; may pick up paper and other debris in area surrounding buildings.
• May train and direct student or temporary employees; may participate in training new employees.
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license, if required by position.

Knowledge Of:

Appropriate safety procedures

Ability To:

• Operate cleaning equipment (e.g., buffers, shampooers, vacuums, hall machines)
• demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 50 pounds
• Read (e.g., warning labels), write (e.g., brief messages), and accurately follow oral and/or written instructions
• Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
• Identify threatening or unusual conditions and take appropriate action

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Exposed to dirt, odors, heights, cleaning chemicals, and variable temperatures and weather conditions; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting and moving of up to 50 pounds (e.g., moving freight, cabinets, cases of supplies); frequent stooping and bending, climbing ladders, and extended periods of standing and walking; may work varied shifts and hours to include occasional weekends and holidays; may require on- and off-campus travel.

Working Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; however, schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
