Job summary

City of Abilene seeks a Custodian to perform custodial maintenance and ensure a clean, orderly, and safe environment in public buildings. Duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, waste removal, restrooms, floor finishing, and light maintenance across City facilities.

Qualified candidates will have the ability to read and write effectively, basic custodial equipment operation skills, and a Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 90 days. Experience preferred.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general and limited supervision, perform a wide variety of custodial maintenance duties to provide a clean, orderly and safe environment in public buildings. Performs cleaning, housekeeping, and light maintenance of assigned space.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position exercises no supervision over other employees.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Sweep, vacuum and mop floors.
• Dust and clean offices and other work areas.
• Collect and remove waste.
• Clean & restock restrooms.
• Strip and wax floors.
• Move or lift furniture, boxes, and other materials.
• Open and close the facility for use and secure the facility for closing.
• Operate carpet extractor machine and buffers to polish floors.
• Operate a City vehicle or personal vehicle to travel between City facilities in order to complete assigned work.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

• Tools, chemicals, materials, methods, and best practices used in custodial operations.
• Occupational hazards and safety precautions of custodial operations.
• Proper use and care of a variety of tools, materials, and equipment common to custodial operations.

Skill to:

• Operate a variety of custodial equipment including vacuum cleaner, carpet machine, and buffer.

Ability to:

• Maintain a schedule of cleaning and work with a minimum of supervision.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Experience in custodial work is preferred.

Education/Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.

License or Certificate:

A current valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

• Exposure to noise, outdoors, vibration, and confining work spaces.
• Exposure to chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards.
• Ability to travel to different sites.
