Job summary

Mountain Island Charter School in Mount Holly, North Carolina is seeking a Custodial/Grounds Maintenance Support. This on-campus position reports to the Executive Director and focuses on keeping facilities and grounds in good working order, with bus duties as directed by Transportation Director.

  • Inspecting and repairing outdoor structures such as fences, benches, and trash cans.
  • Removing litter and debris from outdoor areas.
  • Operating and maintaining equipment such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers.
  • Identifying and reporting safety hazards or maintenance issues to management.
  • Sweeps and mops floor surfaces.
  • Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures.
  • Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; monitors grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessary.
  • Replaces burned-out light bulbs and completes other similar routine maintenance tasks.
  • Sets traps for rodents and other pests, appropriately discarding trapped animals.
  • Arrange and put away cafeteria tables and other furnishings.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Reporting ultimately to the Executive Director, Custodial/Grounds Maintenance Support performs services in keeping assigned facilities and grounds maintained in good working order and performs related duties as assigned. This position is an on-campus position, which means that an essential function of an employee’s job duties is to work in-person on campus. All employees are expected to cooperate in promoting the best interests of the school. Follows directions of the Transportation Director for bus driving duties.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performing regular maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, and planting flowers.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • May perform minor maintenance on equipment, as abilities allow.
  • May open and secure facilities at start and end of workday, respectively; may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively, and adjust heating or air conditioning, as appropriate.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Some experience in custodial/maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including tractors, mowers, backhoes, landscaping, and grounds maintenance tools, etc. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are for Medium to Heavy Work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to assistants or subordinates.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read work orders, logs, diagrams, etc. Requires the ability to prepare activity logs, simple reports, etc., according to prescribed formats. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize simple mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using hand tools.

Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via telephone.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment.

General knowledge of the occupational hazards of landscaping and grounds maintenance work and the associated safety precautions.

Skill in the use and care of hand tools and equipment necessary to perform landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks.

Ability to participate in the maintenance and repair of tractors, mowers, and other equipment used in grounds maintenance.

Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
