PLEASE NOTE: The starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,274.00 per month to $6,558.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 12).

About The Position

The Custodial Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily and short-term operations of Custodial Services. This role provides comprehensive administrative and operational support by offering both specific and general direction and leadership to Lead Custodians and Custodians in the planning, implementation, delivery, and maintenance of custodial programs and services.

Review of applications will begin on March 18, 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Consult with managers and lead custodians to discuss problem areas and identify means of improvements.
  • Facilitate the development of custodial cleaning programs to achieve the highest possible custodial APPA levels.
  • Conduct inspections as required to ensure that quality standards are being maintained.
  • Interface with faculty and staff members, following up on work requests, inquiries, and related concerns.
  • Determine the replacement or additional equipment needs for all activities.
  • Work effectively with department staff and managers in coordinating operations and work schedules.
  • Effectively oversee process changes, from conceptual discussions with stakeholders to training frontline employees.
  • Prioritize program goals, implementation strategies, and work requirements and communicate them effectively to staff.
  • Help plan, organize, and communicate when starting new programs with staff and building occupants.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and oversee the custodial training program.
  • Provide positive leadership for staff in all custodial program areas.
  • Assist with day‑to‑day custodial operations, provide guidance on best practices, and assist employees with problem solving.
  • Adjust and modify daily custodial assignments to meet operational needs.
  • Provide supervisory coverage during absences or leave, ensuring adequate oversight and continuity of custodial operations.
  • Establish long‑ and short‑range goals for each activity managed.
  • Coordinate closely with deans, department heads, and college/department staff in achieving our cleaning goals.
  • Provide operational recommendations to the Managers of Custodial Services.
  • Conduct building surveys to determine program staffing needs.
  • Assist with training for new employees.
  • Provide input for employee performance evaluations and prepare recommended annual evaluations for submission to Management.
  • Respond to inquiries from Facilities Management staff and managers concerning status of operations.
  • Communicate staff and coordinator concerns to appropriate managers.
  • Work with Microsoft Office software, and computerized maintenance management (Web TMA) and accounting system databases as needed.
  • Coordinate other duties as assigned.
  • May coordinate tasks for other departments (e.g., Grounds), as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Possess a working knowledge of the full range of custodian / lead custodian work as described in the job description and classification.
  • Have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience of direct custodial coordination experience in an institution or environment comparable to the university.
  • Ability to organize custodial projects and independently determine plans and priorities.
  • Ability to independently develop programs, policies, and procedures for continual improvement.
  • Demonstrated customer service attitude.
  • Ability to interpret and apply university policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to develop, interpret, and apply accurate, multiple and precise custodial operations.
  • Ability to perform product research and make comparisons of different custodial work practices, methodologies, products and equipment.
  • Ability to train others on new custodial skills, practices and procedures and provide leadership direction.
  • Ability to effectively write and present reports.
  • Ability to work in an environment of demanding pressures and short deadlines.
  • Proficiency in the use of office software programs, technology and systems, spreadsheets and database management programs and communication.
  • Proficiency with PC‑based software used for training and planning work schedules and tasks.
  • Working knowledge of floor care, general cleaning, and restroom sanitizing procedures.
  • Working knowledge of custodial equipment, procedures and supplies.
  • Possess the skills and ability to directly/indirectly coordinate a large staff including the planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others.
  • Proficient in the English language, written and oral.
  • Knowledge of record keeping including maintaining records, logs, and filing systems.
  • Possession of (or ability to obtain by date of hire) a valid Class C California Driver’s License.
Preferred Skills And Knowledge
  • More than five years of progressive experience in operations and supervision of custodial functions.
  • Ability to perform basic math and make accurate estimates and projections.
  • Proficiency of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Condition(s) of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.

All background checks are conducted through the university's third party vendor, Accurate. LiveScan is conducted through the University Police Department.
