Job description

Join us in shaping Seattle’s streets!

At the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), we don’t just move people—we connect communities, build safer streets, and create a more sustainable city.

With a bold vision for the future, we’re tackling big challenges: making travel safer, cutting carbon emissions, and ensuring reliable, affordable transportation for everyone—no matter who they are or where they live.

Seattle is growing fast, and we’re growing with it. Thanks to a historic voter-approved $1.55 billion investment in transportation in 2024, we’re building sidewalks, fixing bridges, and improving transit connections to keep our city moving.

We’re a team of problem solvers, planners, engineers, communicators, and field crews—bringing purpose-driven work to life. Now, we need passionate, innovative talent like you. Let’s build a Seattle that works for everyone—together!

SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a collaborative Associate Transportation Planner on the Curbside Management Team in the Transit and Mobility Division. Our team is nationally recognized for developing, implementing and managing innovative policies, assets, and technology governing a wide spectrum of curbside parking programs. In this role, you will work to support implementation of Seattle’s Transportation Levy with a focus on critical access needs at the curb. This includes priority uses such as urban goods delivery and loading that help businesses and residential developments thrive. Representing the Curbside Management team, you will participate in numerous teams engaged in the planning, scope development, and conceptual design of many different transportation projects, including new sidewalks, safety improvements, multimodal corridor projects, and public space enhancements. You will be locating various kinds of load zones that are essential for businesses and a fundamental aspect of effective project design and implementation. If you’re ready to support the implementation of a wide variety of transportation projects, we want you on our team! Join us at SDOT and help keep Seattle growing!

  • Analyzes and reviews critical access needs (e.g., load zones for goods and services deliveries) for Levy-funded projects and plans to provide comments on the Complete Streets Checklist, project plans and design documents, reports and other documentation.
  • Tracks projects through project development, design and construction phases and serves as project champion for the Curbside Management team to ensure project designs address critical access needs and other policies.
  • Develops and supports policy documentation related to critical access needs and curbside management programs.
  • Collects, analyzes, and facilitates projects through consultant-led parking studies, data related to curb loading, parking, land use, and development needed to identify patterns, problems and recommended solutions.
  • Performs field visits to investigate and document possible curbspace loading and parking issues and develop potential solutions.
  • Produces curbside related outreach materials and attends public forums and meetings to talk directly with community and business members about parking and curbspace management, curb data and the potential for alternative curb management designs.
  • Supports the development of reports, dashboards and analyses using a variety of data sources and software for tracking work related to this position, including MS Power BI, MS Excel, Tableau, and GIS mapping applications.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative.
