FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree‑seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first‑generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty‑six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four‑year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low‑income students into the middle class and beyond – in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). Persons employed in the title of CUNY Start Instructor shall be assigned to teach and perform related functions as part of the CUNY Start program. The CUNY Start Instructors are full‑time, non‑tenure track positions.

LaGuardia Community College is seeking to fill the position of CUNY Start Math Instructor. CUNY Start at LaGuardia Community College is part of an Office of the Academic Affairs' University‑wide program that operates and partners with eight other CUNY campuses. This intensive pre‑matriculation program is designed to support CUNY degree‑seeking students with significant academic needs to achieve college‑level proficiency in English and/or mathematics. CUNY Start’s highly collaborative model provides an innovative approach to developmental education by fostering open channels of communication, regular team meetings, and shared goals with the aim of providing a more personalized and supportive learning experience for each student. The CUNY Start math Instructor is experienced and well‑versed in the CUNY Start Math curriculum and pedagogical approaches with the ability to articulate key principles that guide the teaching and learning practices of the CUNY Start classroom.

CUNY Start instructors are expected to deliver instruction predominately in person. However, in select situations, fully online or hybrid classes may be required. In such cases, online instruction will be delivered synchronously, with remote and in‑person days determined at the discretion of program management. During periods of remote teaching, CUNY Start Teachers remain responsible for maintaining high levels of student engagement and enacting the CUNY Start curriculum with fidelity to the program model.

  • Teach two CUNY Start Math classes of approximately 25 students each semester, or 50 students total, using the CUNY Start curriculum; teach CUNY Start curriculum in a well‑managed in‑person or online classroom that engages students in a manner that is consistent with CUNY Start's pedagogical approach, based on thorough training in and understanding of CUNY Start Math curriculum, pedagogical values, and approach, and other aspects of the CUNY Start program and be able to articulate those values and that approach to others;
  • If assigned as a support instructor, assist the Core instructor(s) in regularly assigned classrooms and be available for emergency coverages on at least 3 campuses;
  • Provide individual and small group assistance to students outside of class, as appropriate;
  • Participate in professional development meetings facilitated by CUNY Start Math Curriculum and Professional Development Team;
  • Participate in and help run orientation, student conferences, and recruitment as appropriate;
  • Refer and guide students to CUNY Start tutoring for individual support outside or class;
  • Model and provide math tutoring, as needed; coordinate tutor’s schedule to help ensure appropriate supports are in place during class and outside of class;
  • Collaborate closely with program advisors, teaching teams, and administration, including in regular, weekly meetings with advisors and English Instructors.
  • Attend and participate in professional development meetings organized by CUNY Start’s Math Curriculum and Professional Development Team;
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and such other qualifications as may be necessary for the satisfactory performance of his/her instructional functions.

Please note that only current and former CUNY employees who successfully completed at least one term as a Cooperating Math Continuing Education Teacher in the CUNY Start program are eligible to apply, as this experience is required to be appointed to the CUNY Start Instructor title.

Compensation

Salary: $63,497 - $67,182
