Job summary

The Pechanga Band of Indians seeks a Collections Manager to maintain and document the Tribe’s cultural repositories, including digital records, manuscripts, and artifacts. You will collaborate with the Curator, Archivist, and staff to ensure accurate cataloging and safe housing of items.

Responsibilities include assisting with exhibits, data entry, and progress on preservation projects, with occasional evening/weekend hours.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, art history, museum studies, or a closely related field is required.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience managing cultural items and/or artifact collections in a museum environment is required.
  • Knowledge of collections management standards and best practices is required.
  • Experience in care, preservation, documentation, and exhibition procedures is required.
  • Experience or familiarity with Native American collections preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
  • Experience or ability to learn PastPerfect cataloging software is required.
  • Experience with data input and data entry is required.
  • Basic knowledge of Luiseño culture and Native American history preferred.
  • Excellent project management skills are required.
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity and work evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Compliance with the Tribe’s Drug-Free Workplace Policy and successful background check are required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in generating and maintaining digital records and ensure accurate documentation of the collections.
  • Ensure proper storage and conservation of physical items within the repositories.
  • Assist with creation and preparation of exhibits for the Pechanga Reservation and external museums and institutions.
  • Collaborate with the Curator, Archivist, interns, vendors, and staff to lead preservation and access projects.
  • Support emergency preparedness initiatives related to the collections.
