The Ivy Street School is a small, year-round, private residential special education school committed to advancing equity and access for young people living with disabilities. We serve neurodiverse adolescents ages 13-22. We support the whole child through a student-first model that is driven by collaboration, a willingness to think big, and a commitment to knowing our students well.

We believe that every student is exceptional and at Ivy Street, we work tirelessly to create the educational and therapeutic conditions for our students to thrive. As a community, we are focused on the immediate needs of our scholars with an unwavering eye on their future needs and the concrete plans to achieve it. Our multidisciplinary team works to create rich and meaningful experiences that will nurture learning and prepare our students for their transition into adulthood and independent living. While our classrooms have four walls, we consider Boston our second classroom and our students are often making meaning and deepening learning throughout the city.

SUMMARY

Ivy Street is searching for a charismatic energized Culinary Arts Teacher to bring new ideas and programming to Ivy Street students. The Culinary Arts program consists of one teacher and two teaching assistants who work together as a team and are responsible for the instruction, training, and career preparation necessary for students to gain knowledge and comfort in a kitchen environment. Ivy Street is for those who desire to work in an environment that supports their creativity and innovation, and serves a population where their efforts matter. The role includes managing classes, student workers, and the lunch and dinner services at Ivy Street School daily.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching & Teamwork
  • Develop and facilitate responsive and engaging lessons based on student interest and learning styles
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the diverse learning styles and needs of students, incorporating a Project-Based Learning framework for appropriate curricular units
  • Build healthy and meaningful relationships with students through the ARC model
  • Communicate and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team as needed to assess student progress and determine additional supports or interventions for areas of additional treatment needs
  • Attend weekly Teacher Department Meetings
  • Participate in monthly internal Progress Team meetings (PPAM) for specific student needs as required
  • Attend monthly Teacher and All Staff Professional Development sessions
Kitchen Oversight & Regulations
  • Plan and prepare meals for the school, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and weekend meals
  • Proficiency in cooking for multiple dietary restrictions
  • Awareness of allergies and proper food preparation to ensure student safety
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary work environment according to all state regulatory agencies (ServSafe, DESE, EEC)
  • Place weekly food and supply orders for the school through U.S. Foods
  • Proficiency in purchasing and receiving goods
  • Maintain positive relationships with vendors
  • Develop and participate in cleaning routines aligned with state regulatory standards (EEC, Board of Health)
  • Support and prepare for inspections or visits from regulatory agencies
  • Ability to work multiple hours on feet in a kitchen environment

SUPERVISORY

  • Provide direct supervision to a team of two culinary teaching assistants, including bi-weekly 1:1 or group supervision

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION

  • B.A. or B.S. in Special Education, Education, or a related field
  • Vocational Technical Teacher License in Culinary Arts (preferred)
  • Experience working with neurodiverse students
  • Experience in curriculum creation (preferred)
  • Valid driver's license
  • Background check, drug and alcohol testing prior to start
  • CPR and First Aid certification (offered upon hire)
  • ServSafe certification or ability to obtain it

Schedule: Full-time, in person, Monday-Friday 7:00-3:00pm

Frequent walking, standing, driving required. Ability to lift/lightweight and moderate objects, assist with lifting and transfers, and implement safety procedures. Must be able to maintain high energy in a fast-paced environment. CPR and First Aid certification required or obtainable.
