Job description

Definition Under the general supervision of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Director, the Health Science Program Support Specialist is responsible for providing instructional, technical, and operational support to Health Science Education teachers throughout the district. The employee works collaboratively with school administrators, Health Science teachers, business and industry partners, and postsecondary institutions to ensure high-quality Health Science programs that meet state, district, and industry standards. This is a part-time position working up to 20 hours per week. Work hours may vary based on district needs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supports district Health Science teachers with curriculum implementation aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and Health Science Education Essential Standards.
  • Assists teachers in developing instructional materials, classroom resources, laboratory activities, and authentic learning experiences.
  • Provides guidance on implementing clinical, laboratory, and simulation-based instruction.
  • Assists teachers with planning, organizing, and maintaining safe laboratory environments that comply with district, state, and industry regulations.
  • Supports implementation of OSHA, infection control, bloodborne pathogen, HIPAA, and other required health care safety practices.
  • Assists teachers with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and supply recommendations.
  • Coordinates with the district CTE office regarding instructional equipment, laboratory needs, and replacement schedules.
  • Provides technical assistance related to industry credential preparation and technical skill assessments.
  • Assists teachers with student documentation required for clinical experiences and work-based learning.
  • Helps establish and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, hospitals, long-term care facilities, physician practices, and other community partners.
  • Assists in coordinating clinical placements, guest speakers, field experiences, and business partnerships.
  • Supports new Health Science teachers through mentoring, coaching, and orientation to district expectations.
  • Collaborates with teachers to analyze student performance data and identify strategies for continuous program improvement.
  • Assists schools in preparing for state monitoring visits, program reviews, and compliance activities.
  • Supports Perkins V implementation by assisting with local needs assessments, program improvement initiatives, equipment planning, and documentation.
  • Assists with planning and facilitating district professional development for Health Science teachers.
  • Attends district Health Science meetings, advisory committee meetings, and other professional meetings as assigned.
  • Maintains professional relationships with healthcare organizations, postsecondary institutions, and professional associations.
  • Stays current on changes in healthcare practice, Health Science Education curriculum, industry certifications, and state requirements.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of current healthcare practices and industry standards.
  • General knowledge of North Carolina Health Science Education curriculum and Career and Technical Education requirements.
  • General knowledge of OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, bloodborne pathogens, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and support adult learners.
  • Ability to analyze instructional data and recommend improvement strategies.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with teachers, administrators, healthcare professionals, and community partners.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficiency with instructional technology, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and district software applications.
  • Ability to prepare reports, maintain records, and manage program documentation.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with district staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to travel regularly between district schools and healthcare partner sites.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift instructional materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper use of healthcare equipment and instructional materials.
  • Ability to use computers and other office technology for extended periods.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to review instructional materials, reports, and healthcare documentation.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Current unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of nursing experience.
  • Experience teaching Health Science Education at the secondary or postsecondary level preferred.
  • North Carolina Health Science Education teaching license (720) or eligibility for licensure required.
  • Experience with Career and Technical Education programs, clinical coordination, or instructional coaching preferred.

Reports To: Director of Career and Technical Education

Classification: Part-Time (20 Hours per Week) Exempt

Salary: Hourly rate based on teaching certificate. This position is paid as a part-time Technical Assistant position based on the current CTE fiscal policy guide developed by the North Carolina Office of Career and Technical Education.
