Job summary

The EMS Lab Teacher at Wayne Tech and Career Center delivers EMS psychomotor skills instruction in a NYSDOH-aligned program. It supports EMT certification preparation under instructional supervision and does not include supervisory duties.

Minimum qualifications include NYS EMT certification, CPR instructor preferred, and prior EMS teaching or lab support experience. The role is positioned within a structured CTE setting with emphasis on safety and skill mastery.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Active NYS EMT certification.
• Current Health Professional CPR certification (instructor preferred).
• Minimum of two years EMS experience.
• One year EMS instructional or lab support experience preferred.
• CLI certification preferred.
• Eligible for NYSED Trans A certification and must obtain within specified timeframe.

Responsibilities

• Assist with EMS psychomotor instruction in labs per NYSDOH guidelines.
• Observe, evaluate, and document student performance using approved tools.
• Assist with psychomotor testing, skill verification, and competency evaluation.
• Provide constructive feedback and guidance to students on performance.
• Assist with remedial or individualized instruction to support mastery.
• Support lab operations including setup, breakdown, and sanitation.
• Ensure lab safety compliance and proper equipment use.
• Communicate with EMS Program Instructor about student progress.
• Maintain current knowledge of EMS practices and requirements.
• Perform related duties to support the EMS program.

Job Description

Position Summary

The EMS Lab Teacher assists with the delivery, supervision, and evaluation of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) psychomotor skills instruction within a Career & Technical Education (CTE) high school program. Instruction is aligned with New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Bureau of EMS standards and supports students preparing for EMT certification. Work is performed under instructional supervision; this position does not include supervisory responsibility.

Typical Duties And Responsibilities

• Assist with the delivery of EMT psychomotor skills instruction during laboratory sessions in accordance with NYSDOH guidelines, protocols, and approved curricula
• Observe, evaluate, and document student performance using approved skills checkoff sheets and assessment tools
• Assist with psychomotor testing, skill verification, and competency evaluation as required
• Provide constructive feedback and guidance to students regarding performance and professional expectations
• Assist with providing remedial or individualized instruction to support student skill mastery
• Support lab operations including setup, breakdown, equipment sanitation, and inventory
• Ensure compliance with lab safety standards, infection control practices, and appropriate equipment use
• Assist with monitoring student attendance, participation, and progress as directed
• Communicate with the EMS Program Instructor regarding student progress and instructional needs
• Maintain current knowledge of EMS practices, protocols, and educational requirements
• Perform related duties as assigned to support the EMS program

Job Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma
• Active and current New York State EMT (or higher-level) certification
• Current Health Professional CPR certification (instructor preferred)
• Minimum of two (2) years of EMS experience
• One (1) year of EMS instructional, lab, or training support experience preferred
• Certified Lab Instructor (CLI) certification preferred
• Candidates must be eligible for NYSED Trans A certification and must obtain the certification within the required timeframe following appointment. Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining the required certification.

• Working knowledge of EMS theory, protocols, and psychomotor skill instruction
• Ability to operate and maintain EMS training equipment safely
• Knowledge of effective instructional strategies appropriate for high school learners
• Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships in an educational environment

Special Requirement

• Must possess and maintain valid EMT certification issued by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
