Qualifications

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Radiologist, performs a variety of technical procedures, applying ionizing radiation for the purpose of detecting pathology. Performs routine procedures utilizing stationary, overhead tubes, fluoroscopic, portable equipment, and computer technology.

Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to make independent judgments affecting the quality and delivery of the system. Manages and monitors equipment used to expose the x-ray image. Develops and organizes diagnostic quality images prior to giving them to the radiologist for interpretation. Requires the ability to work with a variety group of patients and physical conditions, to include pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Responsible for delivering high quality services, and to interact appropriately with patients and their representatives, physicians, and co-workers. Will safely manage the environment of care while providing services.

Essential Functions

  • This position you will be responsible for patient communications and exam information related to the diagnostic imaging of patient ages:
  • Understands and follows established radiation safety rules. Uses appropriate radiation protection and safety devices.
  • Good working knowledge of RIS and PACS. Orders, starts and completes exams. Charges supplies and documents medication. Sends images to PACS and reviews images.
  • Selects correct protocol and adjusts technique as necessary for anatomical parts. Adapts imaging routines to special imaging situations.
  • Able to adapt techniques to various imaging situations such as patient body habitus and age.
  • Consistently positions correctly with minimal image repeats due to positioning.
  • Able to get quality images in challenging situations and patients and request help when necessary.
  • Includes all patient demographics on the image. Completes all worksheets and scans all necessary paperwork in PACS.
  • Follows age related protocols regarding radiation protection, exam preps, contrast dosage, injection rate, consents and patient education. Consults Radiologist if needed.
  • Uses correct lifting techniques and obtains assistance when needed to prevent injuries when moving patients from/to bed, wheelchair, and imaging tables.
  • Takes appropriate precautions to prevent patient falls or injury. Ensures that unstable patients are not left alone.
  • Transporting patients: Look for tubes, catheters, wires, restraints, IVs and other medical devices before attempting to move or transport patients. Know hospital bed controls.
  • Returning patients to rooms: bed rails up, restraints in place, IV pumps plugged in, catheter bags are hung, patient is covered, and nurse call button is within reach.
  • Understands the hospital patient restraint policy. Understands that patients may be restrained without their permission during imaging procedures to ensure patient safety and quality.
  • Performs all exams in an efficient and professional manner and communicates with patients appropriately to gain their cooperation.
  • Always observes patient carefully during contrast administration. Knows contrast reaction procedures.
  • Respects and protects the patient's privacy and dignity while undressing/dressing for procedures and by keeping them appropriately covered during procedures.
  • Properly sets up patient supplies and equipment before summoning Radiologist for a procedure. Assists Radiologist as needed during procedures.
  • Understands sterile technique and takes action as necessary to prevent the contamination of equipment or sterile field.
  • Warms up equipment before use as needed.
  • Wears gloves, mask, eye shield, and gowns when appropriate. Disposes of sharps, body fluids, contaminated supplies and linen in the proper manner.

  • Treats everyone as their customer; utilizes scripting and other tools to ensure consistency in customer service; expresses recognition and shows appreciation to others; fully utilizes AIDET principles; responds quickly to handle requests, complaints and questions; displays a positive attitude.

Requirements

Experience

  • Good knowledge of all aspects of XRAY procedures and protocols, good patient skills, and good communication.

Education

  • Graduate of a two (2) year accredited school of Radiologic Technology.

Licensure/Certifications

  • Current registry with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography ( R ).
  • Current MRT license with the Texas Medical Board.
