Job description

Must be flexible with work hours to meet department needs. Must be dependable, accountable, and cooperative. Assists with providing safe, age-appropriate care to the patient by performing all exams provided by the department according to department procedures. Has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study. Responsible for performing various technical procedures requiring independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative in the utilization of equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Able to independently perform job functions. Sets up the equipment to provide imaging services and positions patients for the procedure.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions :

Equipment

  1. Demonstrates the ability to adjust technique so that the patient receives the lowest possible dose of ionizing radiation while maintaining image quality.
  2. Reports problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider for timely correction.
  3. Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment according to infection control policies and department schedule.

Patient Care

  1. Verifies proper clinician order for procedures.
  2. Obtains complete clinical history, gathers examination data, and assesses for contraindicating conditions.
  3. Follows procedures for the administration of contrast media to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  4. Ensures proper patient identification and correct use of right and left markers.
  5. Reviews images for clinical acceptability and releases patients.
  6. Responds to emergencies and maintains life support equipment.
  7. Assists other technologists as needed.
  8. Observes patient condition and evaluates situations for physician intervention.
  9. Verifies patient identity using two identifiers before procedures.
  10. Maintains patient privacy, comfort, and dignity throughout exams.
  11. Demonstrates competence in procedures based on patient age.
  12. Organizes schedule and priorities efficiently.
  13. Follows physician instructions during procedures.
  14. Proficient in loading and operating power injectors.
  15. Uses critical thinking skills and communicates effectively with patients and families.
  16. Seeks clarification when orders are ambiguous and demonstrates pre- and post-procedural care understanding.
  17. Prepares patients for procedures and maintains sterile techniques.

Education and Communication

  1. Explains procedures to patients to reduce anxiety using AIDET principles.
  2. Addresses patient questions and concerns, notifying physicians if issues cannot be resolved.
  3. Participates in training and departmental education.
  4. Documents procedures accurately and legibly.

Quality Control

  1. Produces acceptable images, ensuring equipment calibration and functionality.
  2. Sends studies to PACS promptly and manages reports appropriately.
  3. Completes all documentation in RIS before PACS.

Operations

  1. Restocks supplies, maintains cleanliness, and assists with patient transport and positioning.
  2. Performs billing activities and applies shielding and immobilization devices.
  3. Supports departmental functions proactively and communicates responsibilities to supervisor.
  4. Operates all workstations and maintains compliance with regulatory standards.
  5. Takes call as needed and performs any other assigned duties.

Required Minimum Education :

Graduate of AMA-approved School of Radiology Technology.

Required Licenses and Certifications :

  • ARRT Radiography
  • ARRT Computed Tomography
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS Instructor

Additional License(s) and Certification(s) :

Minimum 1 year experience in Radiology required; less than 1 year in CT preferred.

Required Minimum Skills :

Excellent communication skills are essential for interacting with physicians, patients, visitors, and staff. Ability to explain procedures clearly, function independently under pressure, prioritize tasks, and provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
