Job Summary

The CT Technologist I performs procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and standards. Operates CT scanners and associated equipment with a high level of proficiency. This equipment includes scanners, post-processing stations/programs, IV contrast injectors, O2 and suction equipment, patient transport, and patient monitoring equipment.

Essential Functions

  1. Examines requests and verifies orders on each assigned patient. Refers and questions orders to the Radiologist before performing exams. Contacts the ordering provider when there are discrepancies.
  2. Properly identifies patients (using two patient identifiers) and assists patients while offering a brief explanation of the procedures. Prepares patients for the procedure with a full explanation and documents on appropriate worksheets.
  3. Interviews patients for a complete medical history. Reviews in-patient, ER, and outpatient EMRs to obtain pertinent clinical history. Records medical history on requisitions. Correlates other test results and laboratory data with the exam being performed.
  4. Assumes responsibility for the exam from beginning to end, including the completion of dictated results.
  5. Prepares and administers IV contrast according to departmental protocols. Records contrast type and amount upon request.
  6. Evaluates the technical quality of images and consults with a Radiologist if needed. Recognizes abnormal anatomy and processes any additional, reconstructed images, and/or measurements as instructed.
  7. Performs basic patient care functions. Informs appropriate nursing personnel of any changes in the patient’s condition. Initiates life support measures when necessary. Assists in “code blue” procedures during medical emergencies.
  8. Performs CT scanning and assists Radiologist/PA during invasive procedures. Practices proper sterile technique and follows infection control policies.
  9. Obtains medication or contrast material as directed for administration by a licensed practitioner.
  10. Practices radiation safety principles for self, colleagues, patients, and family members, following safety standards.
  11. Reports malfunctioning equipment to the department supervisor and technical staff.
  12. Maintains knowledge and skills for safe work practices in environments with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
  13. Adheres to fire and safety procedures, attends all required safety training.
  14. Performs work accurately and promptly during crises and emergencies. Rotates shifts as required, including call-backs, holidays, and weekends. Punctuality and attendance are expected.
  15. Operates the radiology computer system, including entering orders and documenting contrast administration.
  16. Maintains a neat, organized work area, fully stocked, and clean.
  17. Assists other medical personnel, such as anesthesia, during exams or services involving CT scans.

Physical Requirements

Requires moderate to heavy physical effort, including lifting and moving patients, equipment, and supplies. Occasional standing, walking, and sitting. Frequent stretching, bending, twisting, and kneeling. Exposure to various physical conditions and the need to follow radiation safety guidelines.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Graduate of an accredited two-year AMA program in Radiologic or Nuclear Medicine Technology. ARRT certification in Radiology or NMTCB for Nuclear Medicine. Must obtain ARRT advanced registry in CT scanning within one year of hire. Current CPR certification is also required.
