Job description

Summary

Under the general supervision of the Radiologist, Medical and Radiation Oncologists, and Director of Imaging, the CT Technologist performs high‑quality CT exams and bone densitometry procedures in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols, and established standards of care. The CT Technologist is responsible for providing safe, compassionate and patient‑centered care while ensuring diagnostic image quality and maintaining compliance with radiation safety principles. The role collaborates with physicians and the healthcare team to support efficient workflows and optimize patient outcomes, operating and maintaining CT imaging equipment, performing imaging reconstruction, post‑processing, and administering contrast media as appropriate.

Responsibilities

Perform CT and bone densitometry examinations according to physician orders and departmental protocols.
Participate in exams to maintain competency and quality of care.
Monitor patients, review exams, reconstruct images, and ensure exams are completed in a timely manner.
Assist in the development of radiology policies and procedures to enhance workflow and accuracy.
Serve as a contact for physicians, oncologists, radiologists, radiology staff, and other department members.
Prepare patients, equipment, and examination rooms for procedures; explain procedures, obtain consent, and address patient concerns.
Administer IV contrast media, monitor patients for adverse reactions.
Acquire, reconstruct, and evaluate diagnostic images for quality.
Maintain compliance with radiation safety standards, infection control practices, and ALARA principles.
Document all aspects of patient care and imaging procedures in the medical record.
Coordinate scheduling of CT procedures to provide smooth and efficient patient flow.
Perform routine equipment quality assurance testing and preventive maintenance procedures.
Maintain inventory of supplies and linen for the department.
Submit billing accurately and in a timely manner for CT procedures through the EPIC Radiant system.
Retrieve imaging reports from other practices and provide appropriate copies when requested.
Support radiation oncology services by assisting with CT simulations, patient positioning, and other technical procedures as needed.
Maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA regulations.
Communicate professionally with patients, family members, and the healthcare team.
Attend staff meetings and mandatory in‑services; participate in continuing education and quality improvement initiatives.
Obtain necessary certifications and licensure such as CPR, Radiology Technologist, CT Technologist, and IEMA licenses.

Qualifications

American Registry of Radiologic Technology in Radiologic Technology (RT) certification or registry eligibility required.
American Registry of Radiologic Technology in Radiology and CT certification (ARRT/RT(R)(CT)) or registry eligibility required.
Current licensure in Illinois for practice in Radiology preferred.
Current CPR certification or willingness to become certified.
Completion of EPIC training and successful passing of required tests.
One to three years of CT experience preferred.
Knowledge of CT procedures, equipment operation, basic radiation physics, safety, and patient care techniques.
Ability to function in a fast‑paced environment with patients having acute, chronic, and complex disease processes.
Strong verbal and written English communication skills for safe and effective patient care.
Organizational and interpersonal skills with team members inside and outside the department.
Understanding of patient confidentiality with every encounter.
Positive attitude toward healthcare team members and diverse patient populations.

Physical Requirements

Standing, walking, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, twisting, reaching, kneeling, wrist and digital dexterity. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull objects up to 10–20 pounds and occasionally more. Ability to support persons (possibly 200 pounds or more) in emergency situations. Ability to move quickly from place to place. Possible driving. Speaking, hearing, and visual acuity needed for patient assessment, administering treatments, charting, and operating equipment.

Working Conditions

The job duties involve potential exposure to blood and body fluids, ionizing radiation, chemical disinfectants, radiology chemicals, and metal alloys. Work is performed in a normal patient care environment.
