Job Summary
The CT Technologist II is responsible for performing advanced computed tomography (CT) imaging procedures to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. This role ensures high-quality cross-sectional images for radiologist interpretation while providing compassionate patient care. The CT Technologist II demonstrates expertise in CT imaging protocols, patient safety, radiation protection, and contrast administration while maintaining compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
Essential Functions
- Performs CT imaging procedures with accuracy and efficiency, following established protocols to produce high-quality diagnostic images for radiologist interpretation. Operates and adjusts CT equipment to optimize image clarity while ensuring patient safety.
- Prepares patients for CT exams, including screening for contraindications, obtaining accurate medical history, and providing clear instructions. Ensures proper patient positioning to achieve optimal imaging results.
- Administers contrast media as ordered, following hospital policies and safety guidelines. Monitors patients for potential allergic reactions and takes appropriate action if necessary.
- Adheres to radiation protection standards by applying ALARA principles to minimize radiation exposure. Uses shielding and proper scanning techniques to ensure compliance with standards.
- Performs quality control checks on CT equipment, verifying calibration, accuracy, and functionality before procedures. Troubleshoots minor technical issues and reports malfunctions.
- Reviews and verifies imaging orders, documentation, and patient history to ensure correct procedures. Records information accurately in RIS and EMR systems.
- Uses the I-Stat device for creatinine testing and calculates GFR when required. Documents properly and follows contrast protocols based on lab results.
- Assists in interventional CT procedures, including biopsies and drain placements, by preparing sterile fields and ensuring patient comfort.
- Responds to emergency situations, including adverse reactions or critical imaging requests, following protocols and collaborating with medical staff.
- Maintains a clean, organized, and stocked work area, managing inventory and ensuring equipment readiness.
- Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- 2-4 years experience as an X-Ray technologist required
- 1-2 years CT experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in CT imaging, contrast administration, and anatomy.
- Understanding of radiation safety and ALARA principles.
- Ability to respond to emergency patient conditions.
- Familiarity with interventional CT and sterile techniques.
- Experience with PACS, RIS, and EMR systems.
- Strong communication and patient care skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams in a fast-paced environment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Licensed Radiologic Technologist as required by state
- ARRT Radiography Certification with advanced CT registry preferred; required
- CT - Computed Tomography certification by ARRT required
- BCLS certification within 90 days of hire required
