Job summary

UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital in The Villages, FL is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join our perioperative team. The role supports aseptic technique, assists surgeons, prepares sterile fields and instruments, and ensures patient safety throughout procedures.

Under RN supervision, you will handle instrument passing, specimen handling, and equipment setup, while maintaining sterile field and complying with safety standards.

Qualifications

• Certification in Surgical Technology or equivalent licensure.
• Current BLS certification.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and set up sterile field for procedures.

• Monitor sterile field at all times during surgeries.

Under the direction of the Director/Manager/ Charge Nurse/ and RNs, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing an aseptic environment within the perioperative arena. Surgical conscience is of the utmost importance. Must be well versed in the basics of routine surgical and diagnostic cases.

Responsibilities

• Cleans equipment per department/hospital procedures
• Timely case preparation and sterile filed set up ensuring correct instruments and supplies
• Monitors sterile field at all times
• Demonstrates competency in performing surgical tasks:
• passing supplies, equipment, or instruments
• suctioning or sponging an operative site
• preparing and cutting suture material
• transferring and irrigating with fluids
• transferring, without administering, drugs within the sterile field
• handling specimens
• holding retractors
• application of electrocautery to operative site per surgeon’s direction
• placement of skin staples as surgeon approximates tissue
• assisting in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments with an OR circulating RN
• Robotic Safety
• Competent in scrubbing all major and minor cases
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology relating to the surgical patient and the patient’s surgical procedure.
• Demonstrates proper use of the flash sterilizer and documents appropriately.
• Inserts Foleys under RN supervision
• Competent to assist RN in circulating duties
• Demonstrates the proper use and basic troubleshooting of department equipment.
• Demonstrates an understanding of Radiation safety and utilizes protective gear and badge appropriately.
• Assists department in meeting its turnovers and patient flow goals.
• Demonstrates compliance with all HCAHPS behaviors to allow patients and families to have an excellent hospital experience.
• Completes assigned work as scheduled in allotted time frame.
• Engages in departmental/hospital committees, PI projects, and educational offerings to peers, mentoring/precepting of new team members.
• Attends Staff Meetings, completes all required competencies and mandatory education as assigned.
• Seeks training, educational, certification and enhancement in area focus/specialty.
• Demonstrates behavior standards that enhance positive interactions with physicians, peers, patients and family members.
• Completes other duties as requested/assigned.
