Job summary

UF Health Jacksonville Hospital is seeking a dedicated Surgical Tech II to assist surgeons in the operating room and provide direct patient care in a fast-paced perioperative setting.

Responsibilities include instrument handling, maintaining sterile technique, and ensuring readiness of supplies. Must complete surgical technologist program and hold NBSTSA/NCCT/AST certification within 1 year of hire. On-site full-time position with competitive benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care under supervision of licensed providers and RN following AORN/AST standards.
  • Ensures safe care by complying with staffing, attendance, on-call, and holiday coverage policies.
  • Supports unit efficiency with on-time case starts and room turnover.
  • Applies basic surgical technologist skills to assigned services.
  • Prepares supplies and instruments before procedures.
  • Anticipates needs during procedures based on assessment and physician preference.
  • Handles cleaning, decontamination, sterilization of instrumentation per AAMI and policies.
  • Follows up on instrument concerns like missing or damaged items.
  • Complies with patient safety and handoff protocols.
  • Monitors sterile technique and communicates deviations.
  • Follows infection control practices and PPE usage.
  • Adheres to policies on attire, time, media, and parking.
  • Maintains current certifications and competencies through CE.
  • Attends safety trainings, meetings and in-services.
  • Supports evaluation of new supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in PI/QIT/RCAs and evidence-based practice projects.
  • Supports research and implementation of best practices.
  • Participates in peer interviewing and reviews as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Assist the surgeon(s) by providing basic instrumentation and sterile techniques for procedures performed in the Operating Room and provide patient care in the clinical setting. The Surgical Tech II is also responsible for the care, handling and maintenance of basic surgical equipment and instrumentation.

Responsibilities
  • Performs patient care under the supervision of a licensed provider and Registered Nurse in accordance with the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), Association of Surgical Technologist (AST) standards, and hospital policies and procedures. (20%)
  • Ensures effective and safe care for patients by complying with organizational staffing and scheduling guidelines such as: attendance, floating, mandatory overtime, on-call, holiday coverage and disaster response. (5%)
  • Actively performs tasks that support as well as adherence to efficiency expectations of the unit to include but not limited to on-time first case starts and room turnover times. (5%)
  • Demonstrates the application of basic surgical technologist skills to any service assigned. (10%)
  • Demonstrates proactive preparation for procedures by obtaining the correct supplies and instrument prior to the surgical procedure. (10%)
  • Anticipates needs during the surgical procedure based upon the patient assessment, procedure performed and physician preference. (10%)
  • Demonstrates the proper handling, cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization techniques of instrumentation as provided by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), manufacturer's instructions for use and organizational policies. (5%)
  • Demonstrates responsibility in following through with instrument concerns to include but not limited to missing, broken, and required instrumentation. (5%)
  • Complies with patient safety goals and programs as defined in hospital policies and procedures such as accurate identification of patients; communication amongst care givers during handoff, timeout and debriefing; fire risk reduction protocol; medication administration; patient positioning and prepping; specimen management; counts; infection control; and accurate documentation. (10%)
  • Monitors sterile technique throughout surgical procedure, identifies any deviation from the standard of care and communicates with all team members. (10%)
  • Follows correct infection control practices including, but not limited to correct wearing of surgical attire and use of PPE, hand washing practices and scrub practices. (10%)
  • Adheres to all organizational polices to include but not limited to: attire, time and attendance, cell phone, electronic media, social media, and parking.
  • Proactively maintains current certifications and competencies participating in continuing education.
  • Attends required safety training programs, weekly meetings and in-services.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new supplies, equipment and or instruments.
  • Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, quality improvement teams (QITs), and root cause analyses (RCAs) as necessary.
  • Supports research and the implementation of evidenced based best practices.
  • Participates in peer interviewing and peer reviews as requested.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor within job scope.
Qualifications

Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED. Specific course work: Graduate of surgical technologist program
Necessary Skills:
1. Strong working knowledge of patient care and basic human needs throughout the life span.
2. In depth knowledge of medical terminology.
3. Strong working knowledge of acute and chronic disease processes.
4. Knowledge of computer programs used in perioperative services.
5. Demonstrates teamwork and communicates in a professional manner with all members of the healthcare team.
6. Demonstrates a willingness to learn new methods, procedures and techniques resulting from departmental or organization change.
7. Adapts quickly and easily to change and adjusted behavior and approach to work when necessary to achieve goals.

  • Certification from NBSTSA, NCCT, or AST within 1 year of date of hire/transfer.
  • BLS from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
