Wolfspeed's Materials Business in Durham, NC seeks a Process Development Engineer to push 200mm SiC process control to the next level, partnering with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams to scale production.

You will develop, monitor, and characterize equipment, materials, and processes to improve yield, quality, and cost, while defining control parameters and monitoring systems to rapidly detect variations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Materials Engineering or Materials Science.
  • 2 years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment related to quality and yield.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Willing to work in non-cleanroom environments and interface across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Drive initiatives to enable high-volume manufacture of 200mm SiC.
  • Collaborate with R&D to define, qualify, and transition processes to production.
  • Own engineering duties related to planning, design, and cost improvements.
  • Establish procedures and qualification plans for new processes.
  • Own investigation and improvement of equipment impact on safety, quality and cost.
  • Define control parameters and monitoring systems to detect process variations.
  • Refine methods to increase repeatability, yield, and safety.
  • Apply engineering practices for continuous improvement.
  • Provide data analysis using databases and data analysis tools.
  • Initiate and manage projects to improve wafer quality and yield.
  • Lead process changes with staff to ensure repeatability and control.

Job Summary
  • Materials Business is seeking a high potential, resourceful, hands‑on, problem solving Process Development Engineer with the capacity to quickly grasp and resolve a wide range of technical challenges.
  • The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast paced, deadline‑oriented high‑volume manufacturing environment and work constructively with a cross‑functional team of manufacturing personnel, engineers and technicians.
  • The individual in this role will focus on taking 200mm process to the next level of control and excellence to transition smoothly into large scale manufacturing.
  • The candidate will be responsible for developing, monitoring, and characterization of equipment, raw material, and process impact to quality, yield, and cost of the SiC substrate production process.
  • This position will initially be based in Durham, NC manufacturing site.

  • Drive project initiatives forward to enable high volume manufacture of 200mm SiC
  • Work with R&D team to define, qualify, and transition processes from research through development and production.
  • Responsible for owning a variety of engineering duties related to the planning and design of new products, improving manufacturing methods and initiating changes for cost effectiveness
  • Establish procedures and qualification plan for bringing new processes online.
  • Own investigation, troubleshooting, and improvement of equipment impact on safety, quality, and cost of SiC substrate production processes.
  • Define control parameters, develop and maintain monitoring systems to rapidly detect and act upon process variations.
  • Define and refine methods to increase process repeatability and control to achieve higher yields, lower costs, higher flexibility, lower variation, and a safe work environment
  • Apply good engineering practices to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Provide data analysis and understanding of the SiC manufacturing using databases and data analysis tools.
  • Initiate, manage, and participate in projects to improve wafer quality and yield to exceed customer expectations.
  • Define, train, qualify, and lead process changes with salaried and hourly staff to ensure repeatability, reproducibility, and control.
What you need for success: (Minimum qualifications-quantifiable qualifications)
  • This position requires the lawful ability to access technical data, information, and areas controlled by United States export control laws and regulations.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Materials Science.
  • 2 years Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment troubleshooting equipment, material, or process impact on product quality and yield.
  • Strong organizational and planning abilities, independent thinking, attention to detail, and excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to work in non-cleanroom type environment.
  • Excellent MS Office skills
  • High energy, self‑motivated attitude with strong communication skills and ability to interface effectively with coworkers of different backgrounds at every level of the company
Highly preferred skills and certifications: (Preferred Qualifications, still quantifiable)
  • Front-end Semiconductor processing experience (examples: wafering, polishing, grinding)
  • Familiarity with JMP, Tableau, or similar software package.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCad or similar software.
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and demonstrated success in complete process ownership within a 24x7 manufacturing environment
  • Excellent English language verbal communication, written communication, and presentation skills
  • Statistical process control experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Excellent overall computer and analytical skills
