Job summary

HRL Laboratories, an IBM Company, seeks a Mechanical Engineer to serve as the Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) and lead the design of advanced cryogenic systems for quantum research in California. You will own system-level design, change control, and oversee integration with scientists and engineers.

Responsibilities include CAD modeling, BOM management, thermal analyses, design reviews, and mentoring junior staff in a cutting-edge lab environment.

Qualifications

• Degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering with 4+ years industry experience.
• Experience as system-level REA or equivalent authority.
• Strong CAD skills and GD&T experience.
• Knowledge of heat transfer and cryogenic systems.
• Experience with BOMs and configuration baselines.
• Clear technical writing and design review leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of cryogenic research systems from concept to detail.
• Serve as REA for assigned systems with configuration control.
• Develop CAD models, drawings, and GD&T for complex assemblies.
• Manage product structure, hardware configurations, and BOMs.
• Write assembly instructions and integration plans for builds.
• Oversee system integration and lab testing activities.
• Perform thermal and mechanical analyses to guide design.
• Host design reviews and mentor junior engineers.
