Thorndale ISD is seeking a dependable, attentive, and safety-conscious individual to serve as a School Crossing Guard. The Crossing Guard will help ensure the safe crossing of students, staff, and visitors at designated school crossings during arrival and dismissal times.
Position Summary
The School Crossing Guard is responsible for monitoring designated school crossings, directing pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and promoting safe practices for students traveling to and from campus.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist students safely across designated streets and intersections.
- Monitor traffic and identify potentially hazardous situations.
- Use appropriate hand signals and safety equipment to stop traffic and direct pedestrians.
- Maintain a visible and attentive presence at assigned crossing locations.
- Ensure students remain in designated crossing areas.
- Communicate safety instructions clearly and respectfully to students.
- Report unsafe driving, traffic concerns, accidents, or other incidents to the appropriate district personnel.
- Arrive at the assigned location on time and remain on duty for the designated hours.
- Maintain a positive, professional, and courteous attitude when interacting with students, parents, staff, and the public.
- Follow all district safety procedures and policies.
- Attend required training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous experience working with children is preferred.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and responsible.
- Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and motorists.
- Must exercise good judgment and remain calm in potentially stressful situations.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must successfully complete required background checks and district screening requirements.
Working Conditions
- Primarily an outdoor position.
- Work is generally performed during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
- May be required to work in heat, cold, rain, wind, and other varying weather conditions.
- Position requires standing and walking for extended periods.
- Must maintain constant awareness of traffic and pedestrian activity.
