Croatian Language Instructor - for the Foreign Service Institute, Arlington, VA (onsite)

Piedmont Global Language Solutions (PGLS) serves the DC Metro community and the world with language services such as language instruction, interpretation, translation, transcription, cultural sensitivity training, and localization. Our network of language professionals provides expertise in more than 200 languages, including regional dialects.

PGLS is looking for a Croatian Language and Culture Instructor for an assignment at FSI, starting on 12/16/2024 - 7/11/2025, onsite at FSI campus in Arlington, VA. The applicant must be eligible to work in the US.

Duties
  1. Plan and conduct group Croatian language classes in a small group setting, both onsite and remotely.
  2. Use established materials and work collaboratively with the LTS and other instructors in the team on training and/or testing matters.
  3. Assess students’ progress and provide feedback; consult with LTS and adapt teaching techniques to the students’ individual needs.
  4. Conduct informal and formal progress assessments to evaluate students’ progress.
  5. Provide a respectful, student-centered environment and provide encouragement and constructive feedback.
  6. Maintain an online classroom environment through the Foreign Service Institute’s Learning Management System.
  7. With pre-approval by COR, plan and/or participate in non-classroom activities in the Washington DC area.
Requirements

Required qualifications

  1. Educated native or near-native speaker of Croatian (preferably Level S-4 or higher on ILR scale).
  2. Cultural background of Croatia and the geographic area, by being raised or educated in Croatia or by living in an enclave or heritage community in another country.
  3. BA/BS, MA/MS or Ph.D. or foreign equivalent degree(s) in any field.
  4. A minimum of 3 years of experience teaching the respective foreign language to adult learners (2 or more students).
  5. A minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching the respective foreign language with proficiency-based or task-based curricula.
  6. A minimum of one (1) year administering proficiency-based assessments (serving as an FSI tester or rater, administering DLPT or OPI exams, administering task-based quizzes or weekly assessments).
  7. Knowledge of basic computer skills: e.g email, Microsoft Office Suite, online meeting software (Zoom, Skype, MS Teams, WebEx).
  8. Experience with hybrid teaching.

Preferred qualifications

  1. Experience developing foreign language instructional material and/or curricula.
  2. Experience teaching with the communicative approach to language teaching and incorporating a range of educational technologies in teaching.
  3. Experience delivering training targeted to the needs of the diplomatic community.
