Job Description

The Critical Utilities Technician I is responsible for the safe operation, monitoring, and maintenance of site utility systems including steam, water, and compressed air, with a primary focus on small high-pressure boiler systems. This role ensures continuous, compliant operation of critical systems supporting GMP manufacturing operations.

  • Operate and monitor small high-pressure boiler systems to ensure safe and continuous operation
  • Maintain GMP building and grounds standards for utility areas and equipment
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance across steam, water, and air systems
  • Operate and maintain clean compressed air systems in compliance with GMP requirements
  • Utilize SAP CMMS to document work orders, maintenance, and inspections
  • Follow all safety protocols and proper PPE usage
  • Operate mobile equipment as required for maintenance activities
  • Perform mechanical repairs, welding, and fabrication work to support utilities
  • Execute rigging activities for equipment installation and maintenance
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings
  • Support machining and component repair work as needed
  • Utilize proper tools and demonstrate strong tool proficiency
  • Support pest control and housekeeping standards within utility areas
  • Use MS Office (including Excel) for documentation, tracking, and reporting
  • Identify and elevate system issues impacting reliability, safety, or compliance
Critical Utilities Technician II

The Critical Utilities Technician II performs Critical Utilities Technician responsibilities while supporting the reliable, compliant operation and maintenance of critical GMP utility systems, including boiler, water treatment, purified water, wastewater, cooling tower, clean steam, and associated utility infrastructure. This role demonstrates strong working knowledge across foundational critical utilities and supports troubleshooting, documentation, audits, inspections, and ongoing system improvement. Advanced system ownership in specialized areas such as WFI systems, industrial plumbing, pipefitting, and higher-level boiler operation is preferred to support progression within the same job family.

  • Perform Critical Utilities Technician responsibilities in support of safe, compliant, and reliable GMP utility operations.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boiler and utility systems to support continuous site operations.
  • Execute and monitor water pre-treatment processes, water chemistry, and dosing adjustments to maintain system integrity and performance.
  • Operate and maintain RO, purified water, wastewater, cooling tower, and clean steam systems in alignment with GMP, safety, environmental, and regulatory expectations.
  • Support troubleshooting and repair across steam, water, air, cooling tower, boiler, purified water, wastewater, and related utility systems.
  • Document operations, maintenance, testing, and system performance within SAP CMMS and applicable tracking systems.
  • Support audits, inspections, quality reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives related to critical utilities systems.
  • Identify system inefficiencies, reliability risks, and opportunities for corrective action, operational improvement, and efficiency gains.
  • Coordinate with Facilities, Maintenance, Quality, Operations, EHS, and other internal partners to maintain compliant utility operations.
  • Preferred/advanced: Support WFI systems, piping infrastructure, industrial plumbing/pipefitting work, and higher-level boiler operation where qualified.
Critical Utilities Technician III

The Critical Utilities Technician III performs all prior Utilities and Boiler Operator responsibilities while serving as a subject matter expert in critical utilities. This role leads advanced diagnostics, predictive maintenance, and system optimization activities to ensure the highest level of reliability, safety, and compliance across all GMP utility systems.

  • Perform all prior Critical Utilities Technician, Boiler Operator Class 3, Water Treatment Operator II, and Boiler Operator Class 2 responsibilities
  • Lead advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics across steam, water, air, and utility systems
  • Perform shaft alignment on rotating equipment to ensure optimal system performance
  • Utilize thermography to inspect equipment and identify potential failures
  • Conduct vibration analysis to monitor equipment health and predict maintenance needs
  • Support and guide predictive maintenance strategies across utilities systems
  • Manage and track purchase orders for parts, services, and materials to support system reliability
  • Support planning and coordination of maintenance activities and projects
  • Provide technical expertise during system failures, deviations, or investigations
  • Ensure all activities comply with GMP, safety, and environmental standards
  • Support audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications
Critical Utilities Technician I
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical training or certification in boiler operation, mechanical systems, or related field preferred
  • Experience in GMP or regulated manufacturing environment preferred
  • Experience operating boiler systems or critical utilities
  • Basic knowledge of high-pressure boiler operation and safety
  • Understanding of steam, water, and clean compressed air systems
  • Mechanical aptitude including welding, fabrication, and machining
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical documentation
  • Proficiency in tool usage and maintenance practices
  • Working knowledge of SAP CMMS
  • Knowledge of safety practices and PPE requirements
  • Ability to operate mobile equipment
  • Familiarity with pest control practices in industrial environments
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office tools (Excel preferred)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to compliance
  • Ability to work independently and respond to system needs
Critical Utilities Technician II
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Any site-required license, certification, or qualification necessary to operate assigned utilities systems safely and compliantly.
  • Boiler Operator Class 3 license or equivalent certification required when assigned to boiler operations requiring that credential.
  • Boiler Operator Class 2 license or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Boiler Operator or Water Treatment certification preferred.
  • Additional utility, water treatment, wastewater, or related trade certifications preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with water treatment and/or GMP utility systems.
  • Experience with cooling towers and water treatment systems.
  • Working knowledge of critical utilities documentation, safety expectations, and compliance practices.
  • 5+ years of experience in utilities, water treatment, boiler operations, or related technical field preferred.
  • Experience with WFI systems and critical GMP utilities preferred.Experience in regulated pharmaceutical or manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Industrial plumbing, pipefitting, and piping infrastructure experience preferred.
  • Critical utilities operation and maintenance across assigned GMP systems
