Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of hands‑on operational experience in a critical environment (data centers, hospitals, trading hubs).
• Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, electrical schematics, and single-line diagrams.
• Journeyman or Master Electrician license preferred; NFPA 70E/OSHA 10/30 preferred.
• Experience with NFPA 70E, NEC, and LOTO procedures; data center exposure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform tests, rounds and data analysis for critical facility operations.
• Monitor and operate BMS/SCADA systems; manage alarms and adjustments.
• Execute preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems and components.
• Lead incident response, perform RCA, and implement corrective actions.
• Develop and review MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs for critical systems.
• Ensure safety standards and local code compliance; enforce LOTO and arc flash controls.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs.
• Monitor load, redundancy (N+1, 2N) and PUE to prevent outages.

Position Overview

Critical Facilities Engineer (Electrical Focus) Performs day-to-day operations, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs across base building and critical electrical infrastructure. This position focuses on maintaining high-reliability power generation, distribution, backup systems, and emergency power operations to maintain 100% uptime for complex, high-reliability data center or facility operations. Possesses a strong background in operating complex electrical systems, analyzing system performance, and responding swiftly to operational and emergency situations in critical environments.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• System Monitoring & Operation: Perform tests, rounds and data analysis to ensure optimal functioning of critical operations for the facility, including but not limited to Chilled water systems, electrical distribution systems, building automation systems, and monitoring systems around the plant.
• Building Automation Systems (BMS): Monitor and perform operations via site computerized Building Automation Systems (BMS) to verify proper operating parameters, make approved adjustments, manage alarms, perform manual overrides, or switch to backup systems as necessary.
• Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs)—including filters, belts, lubrication, and mechanical checkups—using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) / work order software.
• Incident Response & RCA: Lead emergency response efforts during power outages, equipment faults, or utility anomalies. Conduct thorough Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement long-term corrective actions.
• Operational Documentation: Write, review, and execute Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) for critical work.
• Safety & Compliance: Enforce safety standards, including Arc Flash safety, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols, NFPA 70E compliance, and local codes.
• Vendor & Contractor Coordination: Coordinate with outside contractors, vendors, and specialists for specialized repairs, ensuring proper approvals and keeping detailed logs of all work performed.
• Capacity & Load Management: Monitor electrical load distribution, system redundancy (N+1, 2N), power usage effectiveness (PUE), and overall capacity planning to prevent system overloads.
• Electrical Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot critical electrical power distribution systems, switchgear, ATS, UPS, Batteries, RPPs, PDUs, and power supplies.
• System Adjustments: Make approved adjustments to systems, sequences of operation, and control parameters to maintain proper equipment operation.
• Drawing Review: Review and interpret control drawings, mechanical plans, electrical diagrams, sequences of operation, and system schematics.
• Functional Testing: Perform preventative maintenance and functional testing of electrical systems.
• Upgrades & Integration: Assist with system upgrades, installations, integration projects, and commissioning of new equipment.
• Documentation: Maintain organized controls documentation, drawings, backups, programming files, and equipment records.

• Technical & Engineering Hard Skills
  • Power Infrastructure Systems: Deep knowledge of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) topologies (static, rotary), static transfer switches (STS), switchgear, transformers, and emergency diesel generators.
  • Schematics & Single-Line Reading: Exceptional ability to interpret single-line diagrams (SLDs), electrical control schematics, and wiring diagrams instantly during emergencies.
  • EPMS / SCADA / BMS: Proficiency using Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and Building Management Systems (BMS) to track metrics, trends, and alarms in real time.
  • Electrical Safety & Code: Mastery of NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace), NEC (National Electrical Code), and LOTO (Lockout/Tagout) procedures to ensure zero safety incidents.

  • MOP/SOP Execution: Strict adherence to strict change-management workflows. A strong candidate never touches critical gear without an approved Method of Procedure (MOP).
  • Capacity Planning: Understanding electrical phase balancing, power factor correction, and load management across redundant circuits ( N+1, 2N).
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Structured troubleshooting skills to determine why a fault occurred (using 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, etc.) rather than just resetting equipment.
• Critical Soft Skills
  • Calm Under Pressure: Ability to make sound, methodical decisions during high-stress electrical faults or equipment failures where downtime is critical.
  • Clear Risk Communication: Ability to translate complex technical issues into plain language for non-technical stakeholders,management and fellow employees..
  • Attention to Detail: Vigilance in detecting subtle anomalies—such as abnormal thermal readings, unusual hums, or minor voltage fluctuations—before they cause an outage.

Skills, Education, and Qualifications

• Required Education & Experience
  • Trade/Military school training,Electrical License, Associate degree in Electrical Technology, or equivalent.
  • 3–5+ years of hands‑on operational experience in a critical environment (Data Centers, Hospitals, Financial Trading Hubs, or Telecom Central Offices).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend complicated blueprints, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and technical specifications. Deep understanding of single-line diagrams, electrical power distribution, backup generators, parallel gear, and control systems.
• Certifications & Licensures
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician License (Highly Preferred).
  • NFPA 70E Certification / OSHA 10/30 (Preferred).
  • Certified Data Center Professional (CDCP) or similar (A Plus).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Ability to work in shift patterns, including nights, weekends, and holiday coverage, 24/7/365.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in loud environments (with PPE), and navigate mechanical/electrical rooms safely.
